The School

The school I observed is Bear Creek Elementary school, which is part of the Grapevine

Colleyville school district. I observed Mrs. Beach in third grade on March 25th from

1:00pm-3:00pm. She teaches all content areas, which includes ELA, math, science, and social

studies. I was able to observe the Social Studies and Science content areas. Bear Creek services

kids from ages 3 to 11. It is a small, one story building that prioritizes telling students about

college and getting them excited about this by hosting pep rallies where they proudly represent a

college (picked by the teacher). Mrs. Beach uses fluorescent lighting, groups her students in

three groups of eight desks and has twenty-one students.

Field Analysis #4 2

Summary of Activities

This observation was done at the end of the day during Science and Social Studies. After

the initial instruction, the students were working independently. During the Social Studies lesson,

almost all of the students were engaged. Only about two or three students looked bored and

uninterested. Student A was looking at a wall that was next to them, and Student B was playing

with the chair that was in front of them. This lesson was a continuation of their Money unit, and

they were talking about how businesses work and the different types of businesses. After the

lesson, the students worked on a fill-in-th-black worksheet with the terms they learned from the

article. After they were done, they worked on school work that they had not finished prior to the

lesson.

Summary of Classroom Management

For classroom management, Mrs. Beach uses folders, if the students are not following

instructions, and Bear Brags to reward good behavior. Most of the time the students are on task

and focused on what they are doing. When this happens, Mrs. Beach gives the entire class a

point. There are, however, two students who are constantly getting up and moving around. I have

since found out from Mrs. Beach that she is trying to get those students tested for ADHD. I think

Mrs. Beach’s classroom management plan is good. It seems to be working for her classroom and

her students respect her without fearing her.

Summary of Classroom Dynamics

The overall atmosphere is fun and lots of joking around by both the teacher and the

students. I have noticed, however, that the students don’t really understand Mrs. Beach’s sarcasm

or movie references. Mrs. Beach had made a sarcastic comment to one of the students who asked

a question that Mrs. Beach just answered. The student was confused, and one of the GT students

explained to that student that Mrs. Beach had just used sarcasm. The peer-to-peer relationships

are good. Everyone is willing to help each other and everyone can have fun together too. Mrs.

Beach has a good relationship with all of the students too, while keeping respect at the center of

the relationship.

Overall Impressions

One of the main things that I learned from this observation was that you shouldn’t use

sarcasm with elementary schoolers. Also, if a student in elementary school understands sarcasm,

maybe have them tested for GT capability. I really like Mrs. Beach’s relationship with each of

the students and I hope to have a good relationship with my students.
