Replacement of Polyimide Foam Insulation on Glasscloth Ducts.

1. General

WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S
INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS.

WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU WORK WITH COMPOSITE MATERIALS (CLOTH, FIBER, RESIN, GLASSWOOL,
ETC.). MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS A GOOD FLOW OF AIR THROUGH THE WORK AREA. DO NOT BREATHE
THE DUST, FIBERS OR FUMES. DO NOT SMOKE, EAT OR DRINK WHEN YOU WORK WITH THESE
MATERIALS. USE A RESPIRATOR, PROTECTIVE GLOVES AND EYE/FACE PROTECTION WHEN YOU CUT,
ABRADE OR DRILL THESE MATERIALS. IMMEDIATELY REMOVE THE DUST WITH A VACUUM CLEANER.
THESE MATERIALS ARE SKIN, EYE AND LUNG IRRITANTS.

NOTE: This Task 51-12-00-350-828-A01 is only applicable for replacement of damaged Polyimide Foam Insulation,
see FIGURE 51-12-00-991-201-A .

2. Limits and Restrictions

Use the subsequent procedure for replacement of damaged Polyimide Foam Insulation on
glasscloth ducts if:

• less than 30% of the insulation is damaged. Make a decision to replace part of the insulation, all of the
insulation or repair the insulation, see TASK 51-12-00-350-827-A01 .

• more than 30% of the insulation is damaged the insulation must be replaced. Make a decision to replace
part of the insulation or replace all of the insulation.

• the replacement of insulation will not cause problems when you install the joint sleeves.

3. Inspections

A full inspection of the duct insulation is necessary to look for all damage and to find damage dimensions.
Refer also to B. Limits/Restrictions.

5. Procedure

SUBTASK 350-064-A01
A. Replacement of Polyimide Foam Insulation on Glasscloth Ducts.
CAUTION: BE CAREFUL NOT TO CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE INNER DUCT DURING THIS PROCEDURE.

(1) You can replace part of the insulation or all of the insulation, examine the damage to make your decision. Refer
also to C. Inspection and B. Limits/Restrictions.

(2) Cut and remove the damaged layer of polyimide foam (See FIGURE 51-12-00-991-200-A and FIGURE 51-12-00-
991-201-A ).

(3) Clean the duct (See TASK 51-12-00-100-801-A01 ).

(4) Do an inspection of the duct (See TASK 51-12-00-200-801-A01 ).

(5) If the duct is damaged, repair it (See TASK 51-12-00-350-829-A01 , TASK 51-12-00-350-830-A01 , TASK 51-12-
00-350-831-A01 and TASK 51-12-00-350-833-A01 ).

(6) Use a new layer of polyimide foam. Follow the Engineering Drawings to know the correct dimensions and Material
Specification.

(7) Follow the Engineering Drawings to carefully cut holes in the foam for items which go through the foam. Do not
make the holes larger than necessary.

(8) Put the polyimide foam in position on the duct.(See FIGURE 51-12-00-991-200-A ).

(9) Use Material No. 05THD1 Adhesive Tape-Cellular material Polyimide - to increase the strength of the foam around
the holes which you have cut.

(10) Use Material No. 05THD1 Adhesive Tape-Cellular material Polyimide - to seal the edges of the foam patch. See
FIGURE 51-12-00-991-200-A ).

(11) If you do not replace all of the insulation, use Material No. 05THD1 Adhesive Tape-Cellular material Polyimide -
to seal the joint between the old and the new, replacement insulation. See FIGURE 51-12-00-991-200-A .
