SUMMARY OF LESSON 1O

“GLOBAL MIGRATION”
What is Migration?
- movement of a group of people from one place to another.
MIGRANTS
- a person or group of people who moves from one place to another.
TWO TYPES OF MIGRATIONS:
1. INTERNAL MIGRATION
- refers to people moving from one area to another within one country.
2. INTERNATIONAL MIGRATION
-refers to people cross borders of one country to another.
This can be broken down into five groups:
1. IMMIGRANTS
- Those who move permanently to another country
2. PEOPLE WHO STAY IN ANOTHER COUNTY FOR A FIXED PERIOD OF TIME
-Temporary Residence (at least 6 months in a year).
3. ILLEGAL MIGRANTS
- individuals who enter, reside, or work in a country without proper legal authorization or documentation
from the host country's government.
4. SPONSORED MIGRANTS
-Migrants whose families have “petitioned” them to move to the destination country.
5. REFUGEES (ASYLUM-SEEKERS)
- those unable or unwilling to return because of a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race,
religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, political opinion.
According to Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, native-born
citizens still receive higher support compared to immigrations.

BENEFITS AND DETRIMENTS FOR THE SENDING COUNTRIES

- Even if 90 percent of the value generated by migrant workers remains in their host countries, they have
sent billions back to their home countries.
- Remittances make significant contributions to the development of small- and medium-term industries
that help generate jobs. It may help in lifting “households out of poverty but not in rebalancing growth,
especially in the long run.
- Global migration is “shiphoning... qualified personnel and removing Dynamic young workers. This
process has often been referred to as “brain drain.”
- The loss of professionals in certain key roles, such as doctors, has been detrimental to the migrants`
home countries.
- Governments are aware of this long-term handicap but have no choice but to continue promoting
migrant work as part of state policy because of the remittances` impact on GDP.
- Governments are thus actively involved in the recruitment and deployment of works, some of them
setting up special departments.

THE PROBLEM OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation

- According to them human trafficking is the third largest criminal activity worldwide.
What is Human Trafficking?
- According to the Justice Government it is a crime that involves compelling or coercing a person
to provide labor or services, or to engage in commercial sex acts.
- Has been very profitable that even syndicates, smugglers, and corrupt state officials earn 150
billion dollars a year in 2014.
- Governments, private sectors, and civil society have been working together to combat but the
result remains the same.
International Labour Organization (ILO)
- According to them back in 2012 there were 21 million men, women, and children who were
victims of forced labor.

INTEGRATION
-it is how migrants interact with their new home countries
-Government and private businesses have made policy changes to address integration problems, like
using multiple languages in state documents
-it is a process by which individuals or groups from different backgrounds come together
-it’s creating environments where migrants can contribute economically, socially, and culturally to their
new societies while maintaining their dignity and rights
