Activity1. This is Me. Lets Pack Up!

A. Red-Head Riot (excerpt)

As I walked down the grassy, waterfront slope to P.E, I marvelled at the fact
that I was in second grade, the vast field a model of my mind. My mind swirled
from the number of friends I made last year, and how it felt like I knew
practically everyone. Everyone was so nice to me, and I wondered why others
said it was normal for them. Could it have been the fact I was bullied to a
point where anything else was considered nice?

All right, guys. Today partners are required, said Mr. Dutra. I listened halfway,
but I was swept off my feet by my good friend, Mia.
Mia was the type of person who you cant help being friends with. She had
frizzy, brown hair that jumped with every step; soft, chocolate skin; and
round, almond eyes that glittered with their own spirit, giving her a spark.
She was a generous and caring person as well.

B. A Trip to Baguio City

Traveling is the best way to spend a memorable moment with your family.
A time to set aside the problems and relax. We all know that Baguio City is
one of the well-known places here in the Philippines because of its lovely
tourist spots and the freezing temperature. Seven years ago, April 2010 I was
given the opportunity to visit one of the ravishing places in the Philippines.

As impossible as I thought it would be, I was still shivering under the

countless number of layers I had on, as the icy, cruel wind blew onto my
already frozen face. Before leaving for the trip, my parents and I made sure
that I had more clothes than Id ever wear, so as to keep ourselves warm. Hours
had passed, we arrived at Baguio City. The excitement flowed to every part of
my body as I stepped out of the bus and smelled the fresh air that touched
my skin. We stayed at the Teachers Camp. I was amazed by the place because
of the pine trees and a wide array of beautiful flowers that surrounded it.

The most awaited day came. We presented our speech choir piece before
a crowd, but sad to say we didnt make it. We decided to roam around the city
to marvel at the beautiful tourist attractions- Burnham Park, Botanical
Garden, Mines View Park, Wright Park, The Mansion, Philippine Military
Academy, Camp John Hay and many more. These were the places we visited.

Even though the time we spent there was limited, we still enjoyed. I wish I
could visit Baguio City again.

Lesson
1 Personal Narratives

Let Us Study

Are you excited to know what personal narratives are?

Personal narratives are a form of writing in which the writer relates one
event, incident, or experience from his/her life. It allows you, the writer, to
share your life with others, indirectly experiencing things you describe. Your
job as a writer is to put the reader in the middle of the action, letting them
live through an event, incident, or experience. It also incorporates true to life
descriptive details, as well as the thoughts, feelings, and reactions of the
writer.

The element that distinguishes creative nonfiction from any other genre
of writing is that while other genre is written from an imagination of the writer,
creative nonfiction is, by definition, true. A personal narrative is a true story
about your life. Your story must have a beginning, middle and ending and
setting- so the reader will know where they are by describing where you are,
and the details- so the reader can see where they are and understand what is
happening in the story. These are the most important things to remember in
writing a personal narrative.

The main elements of creative nonfiction are setting, descriptive

imagery, figurative language, plot, and character.

1. Setting is where the story takes place. The writer must establish the setting
in a way which immerses the reader; by showing rather than telling.

Take a look on this example!

Telling
¥ I went to the lake. It was cool.

Showing

¥ My breath almost stopped, my thighs burning as I reached into the

summit. The lake extended before me, aquamarine glistening in the
5

lOMoARcPSD|39178795

hot August afternoon sun. Pine trees lined its shores, dropping their
spicy-scented needles into the clear water. Despite the heat, the
mountain air tasted crisp.

2. Descriptive imagery is the way the writer paints a scene or an image in

the mind of the reader which involves descriptions of one or more of the
five senses. For example, how are you going to describe an apple to a
person who has never seen one before? How are you going to describe it
using the five senses; sight, sound, smell, taste and touch? So, one might
describe an apple as red, sweet- smelling and tasting and the sound of
the apple as a knock as it dropped on the table. By painting a picture
in
the reader’s mind, it immerses them in the story so that they feel they
are actually there.

3. Figurative Language can take the form of a metaphor saying, Aunt

Beckys attitude is as sweet as an apple. By comparing an abstract
concept (attitude) to an object (apple), it imparts a feeling/meaning in a
more interesting way.

4. Plot is one of the basic elements of every story. It refers to the actual
events that take place within the bounds of the narrative. As defined, plot
is identified as the primary subject of a descriptive personal narrative.
Three related elements to consider are scope, sequence, and pacing.

5. Character is a major requirement of any story because characters bring

life to the story. Keep in mind that while human characters are most
frequently featured in stories, sometimes there are non-human
characters in a story such as animals or even the environment itself.

Lesson
2 Travelogue
Welcome to your next lesson. Are you ready to share your experiences about
your travel? Now, let s dig in.

A travelogue is a person’s account of a journey to another country or

place. It can either be a written report with many factual details or a narrative
story about personal impressions and experiences supported by images.
Travelogue does not only refer to something in a written form decorated
with a few pictures, but a piece of writing, the first thing that we imagine when
we hear this word. A story about journey can also be demonstrated as a
motion picture (film), lecture, or talk accompanied by photos or a
presentation.
It can also exist in the form of a book, a blog, a diary or journal, an
article or essay, a podcast, a lecture, a narrated slide show, or in virtually
every written or spoken form of creation.

As a rule, creative writing has no limitations. Since a travelogue is not

a poem, you dont write it only to express your deep feelings and
7

(janilyndoblon8@gmail.com)
lOMoARcPSD|39178795

philosophical beliefs but you are writing it for a certain audience (readers),
so make sure that they will enjoy reading your travelogue.

There are three elements of a travelogue: introduction, main body, and

conclusion.

1. Introduction - catchy, attractive, and short — these words are the main
characteristics of your perfect introduction. The main purpose of this part
is to grab readers attention, so dont forget to add an awesome photo about
your journey.

2. Main body - the heart of your writing. Try to alternate useful facts with
poetic descriptions of beautiful landscapes. In such manner, your readers
will get necessary information and wont get bored reading your travel
blogs.

3. Conclusion - the character of the conclusion depends on your general

purpose whether if you want to thank locals or friends for their
hospitality, express your gratitude in a closing paragraph or if you want
to encourage your audience to visit this destination. You may add a
motivational phrase at the end of your travelogue.

Activity 4. Check on me!

Read the narrative. Observe the way the narrative was written (style,
structure, formal or informal, mood). Write your discussions and comments
or suggestions based on the questions below:

Questions:

1. What do you think the writer wants his/her readers to know about his
or her travel?
2. What are the things to consider in writing a travelogue?
3. Are the elements of a travelogue present in the example?

Travelogue {Cebu City, The Philippines)

June 15, 2010

On our recent trip to The Philippines, we spent a good five days or so in Cebu.
Our main motivation for visiting the island was to attend our friends wedding
ceremony. Since we knew that our main priorities were hanging out with our

Downloaded by janilyn doblon (janilyndoblon8@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|39178795

friends and reuniting a couple of long-lost playmates, we put very little (i.e.
none at all) thought into what we should see or do in Cebu. Our slack attitude
totally paid off though. With nothing planned, we were totally and completely
free to do whatever our friends suggested. Laziness pays off! For once!

:: DO:: Enjoy the Hotel Facilities

Our arrival day was reserved for frolicking in the water park and eating too
much ice cream. Day two was the wedding, and so we had a quick swim in
the morning, and then spent the rest of the day being super excited about
wearing pretty dresses (Stella) and being super excited about attending a
pretty event (me.) But Cebu offers some amazing opportunity for things to see
and do.

My children would have been completely happy to spend five days frolicking
on the splash pad at the hotel. It was incredibly fun, to be fair. And reserving
one or two slow days for this type of thing is just about right, I think.

When the kids get tired off all that sun, there is also a phenomenal indoor
playground for bigger kids, with a drop slide, bouncy castles, ball cribs, and
other amazing fun playthings various and sundry. Next door was also a little
play room for toddlers. However, make sure you bring socks. They’re required
for using the indoor playground.

Right off the shore of the hotel beach, there’s a coral reef, a fish sanctuary of
sorts. It’s not in the very best shape (I imagine that it gets a lot of traffic from
inexperienced snorkelers) BUT it is quite amazing to be able to step out for an
hour and float around and fish watch. And even though this site is right next
to a huge resort, it is teaming with life. I spotted a few new to me fish,
including some kind of cool looking water snake.

Island Hopping in Cebu

Island hopping is a must do, in Cebu. The day after the wedding, the lovely
couple organized an island-hopping trip for us and a few other friends. This
was easily a highlight of our trip, and an experience I cannot recommend
highly enough. We rented a repurposed fishing boat and bobbed around the
waters just off Cebu. (More on this in another post.)
Swimming with the Whale Sharks in Oslob

Swimming with Whale Sharks in Oslob was an unforgettable part of our trip
to Cebu. We drove with our friends about 120 KM South-West of Cebu City to
Oslob. We got to swim literally meters away from wild whale sharks, watching
them right up close, feeding and diving, and drifting along in the water. It was
phenomenal, and so worth the early morning, and the long drive out there.

Downloaded by janilyn doblon

(janilyndoblon8@gmail.com)
lOMoARcPSD|39178795

Tumalog Falls

These stunning waterfalls in Oslob are worth a stop if you’re visiting for the
whale sharks. The cool, freshwater pools, turquoise water, and stunning views
make this place a standout.

:: EAT::

I don’t know if this is fair to say, but I wasn’t overly wowed with the food in
the Philippines. Maybe it’s because food here doesn’t get much press and I
don’t know what to look out for? Or maybe because I had the flu and couldn’t
taste of smell anything for the first half of the trip? Whatever the reason, I was
a bit meh about the food options.

However, I did go quite mental for Lechon, which is beautiful roast pork,
cooked whole on a spit, and served with liver sauce. You guys, it’s seriously
something else. I also ate my weight in mangos, which were amongst the best
I’ve ever had.

:: BRING ::

You’ll find basically everything you need in Cebu City. It’s the second largest
city in the Philippines, and totally well stocked. Of course, if your kids need a
special kind of diapers or formula, bring that. But you’ll be able to find
anything you need here.

Much to my surprise, I found a lot of hippie BS food items and packaged baby
food nonsense that I can never find in Jakarta.

Suit yourselves up well for the sun. Rashies, hats, sunglasses, and water
shoes are all a must. And seriously, bring like two tubes extra of sunscreen.

I’d also suggest activities for the car if you’re planning on taking the kids on
any day trips. Traffic is really slow.

Also, speaking of traffic, car seats are not really a thing in South-East Asia.
So, if you will be doing any car travel and are uncomfortable with your kids
rattling around in the back seat, think about bringing car seats.
Cebu was a great place to travel with kids. Easily accessible, lots of things to
do, good infrastructure, and totally unintimidating. I’ll write more next week
about island hopping and the whale sharks. Those experiences were so
special, I feel like they need their own posts.

Note: This travelogue (owner s original blog) is represented with images/pictures to

show the truthful account of the writer s personal blogs.

Personal Narrative

Going to the doctor is never an experience I look forward to, but my visit to
Dr. Kellsingtons office last week really takes the cake. First of all, I was only
there for a physical exam, so I could join the swim team at school. Even so, I
was kind of creeped-out having to be around medical stuff and the smell that
rubbing alcohol-smell.
The nurse put me in a little room, and I spent another fifteen minutes waiting
for Dr. Kellsington to arrive. Before he came in, a nurse arrived and thought
I was some other kid. She came at me with a huge hypodermic needle saying,
Lets numb the area then Dr. K. can take that off for you. I panicked, let me
tell you.
Im just here for a swim team physical! I shouted, backing away from Nurse
Needle. I wanted out of that place, fast. She started at me strangely and then
checked the name on y chart. oh, she said. I thought you were someone else.
It was enough to give a kid heart failure.

My Wonders of Tagaytay!
Cassandra June Ortega

Ive been to so many places, but I never thought that Tagaytay is one of the
most beautiful places Ive been to. When I was in Grade 3, I first experienced riding
in a bus, where my classmates are with me. My first Field Trip was in Tagaytay. I was
so happy that my parents allowed me to go there. So, that day came and I woke up

earlier than ever before I got to school at 4:00, and I found my bestfriend on the bus,
sitting with her mother. I was with my Mom and Dad. Oh, my sister was there too.
The bus was full at 5:30, as we departed all of us were so excited. After an
hour, I guess, the bus stopped at a gasoline station surrounded with restaurants and
shops. We bought food at Mcdo, my favorite. Finally, we moved on and got to the bus.
After a while, my classmates were in the bus. All in! While the bus was on its way to
Tagaytay, I ate my fries from Mcdo.

When we arrived at our first destination, Leisure Park, we got into the Coffee
Farm. After, the guide showed us Flower Gardens and the Worms World. There, I first
touched a worm. Even though it‘s an eew still, I touched it and it tickled me, especially
when it was on my palm. Anyways, when we got to the Butterfly Garden, we first
passed through a Wishing Well. Too bad, I don‘t have any wish with me. Then, after
that we got into the bus again and went in the famous castle in Tagaytay, Fantasy
World. I saw the castle painted with different colors. I also saw a hanging bridge, it
was so scary, but I wanted to get pass through it. There, I also saw the Taal Volcano
from the castle. After, we got into the Gardenia Factory at Batangas. We got home,
safely. Even though I got so tired, I enjoyed it.

Does not attempt to generate interest.

Serious problems with clarity or focus.

Draws the reader deeply into the scene

through a wide variety of senses: sight,
sound, smell, feel, taste. Writes with
nouns and active verbs.

Has a consistent and compelling narrative

line that is well-shaped, distinct, and
captivating.

The writer is not aware of the audience

needs; most of the time confuses the
reader.

The sequence of events and ideas

presented are not chronologically
arranged.

The writer is fully aware of an audience

and accommodates readers needs
throughout.

Let Us Reflect

In this module, you have learned how to evaluate a travelogue and

personal narrative. These skills are very important as your guide as you write
