Determining Concentrations of Unknown Solutions

Pre-lab:(All parts will be collected at the beginning of the period except the data
table). You can complete all the pre-lab on front and back of the graph paper.

1) Create a flow chart and data table for Parts 1 and 2. Use a ruler.
2) Hand graph the following using proper graphing rules and REAL graph paper.

Answer the following questions on the graph.

a) Determine the point in which the solubilities of both solutions are the same.
Give the value for each solution and label it on the graph.
b) Which substance is more soluble as temperature increases? Explain.
c) At 55°C, what is the solubility of each solution?
a. Are the solutions unsaturated, saturated or supersaturated? How do you
know? How much more do you need to add/remove to make a saturated
solution if your solution was not saturated?
b. Calculate the %, molarity, molality, and ppb for each solution.
Part 2: Concentration of Sodium Chloride Solution

Purpose: Determining the concentration of a unknown sodium chloride solution at given

temperature.

beaker as shown in the picture.
NOTE: Do not heat at high
temperatures, the NaCl will begin
to pop and mass will be lost.

Calculations:
Show all the work (equations, plug in numbers, significant digits, units) to receive full
credit.

1) Calculate the percent of NaCl.

2) Calculate the mass/volume percent of NaCl.
3) Calculate the molarity of NaCl.
4) Calculate the molality of NaCl.
5) Determine the percent error of for your NaCl solution by looking up the accepted
values. Was your solution unsaturated, saturated or supersaturated? How do you
know? How much more do you need to add/remove to make a saturated solution if
your solution was not saturated?
6) Write a good CER.
