Exam 1 Review

This is a review that I made for you guys. If you complete

the review I will give you 20 points extra credit you can
use on the previous quiz or add onto your existing extra
credit. You do have to show your work or reasoning.

1. Define the following:

Mole
- is a unit measuring the amount of substance of an entity. It
contains 6.022x10^23 of the entities.
Intensive property
- a characteristic of something that never changes regardless on
the amount, it depends only on the type of matter.
Extensive property
- a characteristic of something that changes based on the amount.
Homogenous Mixture
- mixture that is the same all throughout
Heterogenous Mixture
- mixture in which you can visibly see the different components
Chemical Change-
- process through which a substances chemical composition changes,
this process is not reversible unless another chemical reaction
is used
Physical Change
- reversible change in the physical property of a substance. It
can be reversed through physical means.
Density-
- helps describe the mass per volume of a substance, how much of
something is in a given amount of space (how dense the particles
in a substance are)
Significant Figure
- The amount of digits in a number that make a term more accurate
or precise

2. Manuel’s eyes are blue, the color of his eyes is an example of

what kind of property?
- Intensive property
3. My hydroflask can hold up to 2 liters of water, this volume is an
example of what kind of property?
- Extensive property

4. I bought 200 dollars’ worth of groceries, but ate out every day
instead, and my milk spoiled. The bacteria that formed on top of
my milk contained is what type of change?
- Chemical change

5. My ice cream cone melted on my hand. This is what type of change?

- Physical change

6. A mixture contains 23.55 g of A, 47.21g of B, and 79.30g of C.

Calculate the percentages for each of the components.
- 23.55+47.21+79.30= 150.06 g total
- Percentage of A= (23.55/150.06)*100= 15.69%
- Percentage of B= (47.21/150.06)*100= 31.46%
- Percentage of C= (79.30/150.06)*100= 52.85%

7. What is the mass of 55.74 mL of pure methanol, if the density of

methanol is 0.791g/mL?
- Mass= density * volume
- 55.74mL*0.791g/mL= 44.1 g

8. Match the following:

a. Mixing sugar and carbon (1) 1. Heterogeneous mixture

b. Water boiling (2) 2. Physical property

c. The volume of a fish pond (5) 3. Chemical property
d. Coffee (6) 4. Intensive property
e. The bumper of a car rusting (3) 5. Extensive property
f. The texture of fabric (4) 6. Homogenous mixture

9. Which one of the following represents the largest mass?

A) 1.2*102 g
B) 12g
C) 6/.5 g
D) They’re all the same weight.

10. Name all the diatomic elements

- Have no fear of ice-cold bears
- Hydrogen, nitrogen, fluorine, oxygen, iodine, chlorine, bromine

11. How many significant figures are there in 20.007?

- 5 significant figures

12. Add 55.306 and .003 to the correct number of significant

figures.
- 55.309

13. An atom of the isotope carbon-13 consists of how many

protons, neutrons, and electrons?

- 12 protons, 13 neutrons, and 12 electrons

14. How many protons, neutrons and electrons are there in 11

23
Na ?
+1

- 11 protons, 10 electrons, and 12 neutrons

15. What is the name of Ca3(PO4)2?

- Calcium Phosphate

16. What is the name of this straight chain carbon compound

C8H18?
- Octane

17. What is the name of the ionic compound formed by Magnesium

ions and sulfate ions?

A) MgS B)Mg2SO3 C) Mg(SO4) D)Mg3(SO4)2

18. Name the following: Ba(OH)2, Ca(SO4), BF3, NH4 +
- Barium Hydroxide, Calcium Sulfate, Boron Fluoride, Ammonium

19. Convert 150g of Decane to moles.

- Decane= C10H22,
- First step:
- molar mass: 142.476g/mol
o C= 12.01*15= 120.1
o H= 1.008*22= 22.176
- Second step: 150g of decane *1mol/142.476g = 1.05 mol

20. There are 56g of Na2(SO3) in a sample, find the atoms of

sodium in the compound.
- First step
- Molar mass: 126.04 g/mol
o Na: 22.99*2= 45.98
o S: 32.06
o O: 16.00*3= 48
- Second step
o 56g of Na2(SO3)* 1mol/126.04g= 0.44 moles
- Third step
o 0.44 mol*2(mol of Na per mol of Na2(SO3))= 0.88mol of Na
- Last step
o 0.88mol* 6.022*10^23= 5.3 atoms of Na
