The Jonite Story
Inspired by the beautiful and magnificient stone castles built
during the Middle Ages, we wondered if we could incorporate
the rustic appeal of natural tone into strong, functional grates.

Thus began our journey to creating the world’s first reinforced stone grate. After seven years of extensive research and
development, coupled with intensive industry feedback, culminated in our first commercially-viable reinforced stone
gratings being launched to the world in 1994.

In the years since then, Jonite has continued to partner with architects, developers and other distinguished customers in
hardscape design, striving to create an even stronger, more aesthetically appealing and environmentally friendly reinforced
stone grates and panels. Since then, hundreds of architects have specified Jonite, chosen for the ultimate marriage of
aesthetics and load-bearing performance.

Jonite is also the only grates manufacturer to be recognised as a Leader with 4 ticks under the
SGBC (Singapore Green Building Council) Architectural Drain Covers category. Products are
assessed on their environmental properties and performance through a comprehensive list of

Heel-Guard Grates
Specially designed with elegant ladies in mind, Jonite’s
Heel-Guard Grates have slim 6mm slots and small radius
fillets to prevent high heels from being caught in the grates.
Compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
requirements, these are extremely useful for cut-off or
scupper drains of the entrance or concourse areas of a
building.
L-Trimmers
L-Trimmers are always recommended for gratings built for
heavy-duty applications and above. They are designed to
provide aesthetic flair as well as ideal support for all Jonite
gratings.
Lockable Grates
Jonite gratings are relatively safe from vandals even without
a locking system. Metal gratings are most commonly stolen
to be sold for scrap; Jonite has no scrap value and is thus safe
from theft. However, it is a mandatory requirement in many
countries for public gratings to have locking systems installed.
Our Lockable Grates are customisable to any size.
Custom Curve Grates Of Various Radii
Jonite Curve Grates are available in any radius at an affordable
cost. We also maintain a list of Custom Curve Grates for
architects to keep costs low. This list is available upon

Lockable System
The optional Lockable System feature for our Sump Covers
is available upon request and is available for all applications
and sizes. The L-Trimmer Frame comes with embedded
nuts and stainless steel 304 fastening bolts.
L-Trimmer Frames
L-Trimmer Frames are mainly used for supporting sump
covers, especially for heavy-duty applications and above.
They provide a perfect flat surface and seating allowance
to maximise performance of the sump cover. Our frames
are aesthetically designed to work within the overall look
and feel of the area.
Multiple Sump Covers Using Metal Spline Method
Huge Sump Covers may not be attainable in Jonite, but
using Jonite’s standard Sump Covers in sectional form is a
more cost effective solution. They are supported by metal
splines specially designed to sustain the required loads as
illustrated.
Hinged System
The optional Hinged System feature for our Sump Covers
is available upon request and is suitable for all applications
and sizes. The exposed hinge components are made of
stainless steel 304 with weather-proof polyurethane
dampers.
Spline
Splines
Splines are available in matching look and feel to the grates
they are used with. They are reinforced and strengthened
to sustain the load of two or more covers, according
to the load required. Both ends of the spline must be
embedded into the concrete with sufficient seating of the
recommended sump.

Grate Tiles And 90° Corners Pool Grates Stud Trimmers

Grate Tiles are used in irregular drain connections and are
cut according to site requirements by the installer.
Available in limited models only, the 90° Corner Pool
Grates allow a perfect perpendicular turn.
This feature improves the efficiency of the flow rate of an
existing pool grate. They can also be used individually for
non-perforated granite or stone slabs which are well under
the acceptable flow rate.

Concrete Bases
Concrete Bases can either be cast on site or prefabricated by a local
contractor. The lower base openings allow excessive water to drain off,
while the concrete base itself controls surface rooting, retaining good soil
condition. In some cases, a complete concrete pit for the tree is incorporated
into the ground.

A Grate Shim is a flat strip of various thickness and
approximately 30mm width, used to raise the grating to
the desired height. It is fused permanently to the base of
the grating during the fabrication process.
Tile Strips give an added flair to the edge of gratings
covering concrete drains. Installable with SealFix™ 103,
these tile strips are approximately 10mm thick and made
of similar material as the grating.

Grate Tiles are used when a drain encounters an irregular
joint. The light duty models may be cut on site by the
installer. Heavy duty and above models should be factor
fabricated according to templates attained from site by
the installer.

L-Trimmers and L-Trimmer Frames are recommended for
Heavy Duty Gratings and above, providing aesthetical flair

Reducers come in various inner and outer diameters and
simple universal patterns, enabling them to suit various
tree-grate models. Its main purpose is to allow a simple
removal when the growth of the tree requires expansion
of the tree grate.
Blank Ends come with a wider allowance of 50mm on
each side of the grate for trimming, thus creating curvature
without using curve grates. Alternatively, they can also be
used for end pieces with odd lengths.

Repair Kit SealFix™ 103 ShieldFix™ 108 Kleansol™ 511 Lifting Hooks

Jonite, like any other natural stone
material, can be chipped by hard or
sharp objects at impact or damaged
as a result of mishandling. Our handy
Repair Kit, an epoxy putty filler
system, allows you to easily make
needed repairs.
The pre-mixed filler comes in
standard colours that can be custom-
matched as required. The repair is
not superficial; rather it fuses to the
core of the affected area as an integral
unit, creating an even stronger bond
than its original state. This formulation
is specially designed for Jonite
products only.
SealFix™ 103 is a two-part epoxy
mortar specially formulated for fixing
Jonite components such as
L-Trimmers or Frames used for
heavy-duty performance. It has high
strength bonding, is impermeable and
chemical-resistant and suitable for
‘dry-fixing’.
Surface Preparation
Surface to be sealed must be flat,
solid and stable. All loose particles,
oil, paint, wax or any substance that
may inhibit adhesion must be
removed. Adequate preparation via
suitable mechanical means like
scrabbling, grit blasting or needle
gunning is crucial.
All Jonite products are impregnated
with a film of ShieldFix™ 108, a clear
stone sealer. It acts as a protective veil
during installation and handling.
It has a very high compressive strength,
remarkable cohesion and superior
hardness and high wear-and-tear
resistance, it is suitable even for
driveways.
Surface Preparation
1. ShieldFix™ 108 is a two-component
solvent-based coating in a matt finish.
2. Re-coating is possible if attempted in a
proper environment and clean surface
condition, using the correct application
method.
A new propriety solution, Kleansol™
511 is a stain and algae removal
solution specially formulated for
soiled Jonite products, especially pool

Packing
1. Available in 1-litre, 5-litre and 25-litre
packing. PVC containers of 75-litre
and 125-litre capacity for soaking are
available upon request.
2. Glass marbles for the stacking of
gratings during soaking are also
available upon request.
Lifting hooks are used for the
installation and removal of
gratings. Most gratings are
designed with an up-lift force
of less than 50kg, requiring
only a maximum of two people
to lift. For heavier gratings, a
pair of T-hooks is recommended.
T-hooks are available in steel and
various materials to suit different
sizes of gratings, and can also
be used to pick up small pieces
of gravel stuck between grating
slots during maintenance.

Understanding Loads Affecting Grates:

Static Loads refers to load applied vertically to the grating with no Vehicle
other movement, such as load from a stationary vehicle. Moving

Wheel-loads refer to the weight of the vehicle and its typical load

load like the test-block in the illustration and solid tyres post a greater
point load, which is only recommended for Class E600 and F900.

Group 1 - (Class A15)

Areas strictly for pedestrians and pedal cyclists.

House drains, pool decks, courtyards, park-
walkways and pedestrian compounds within
precincts.

Group 2 - (Class B125)

Public footways and comparable areas,car

porches and parks. Generally for slow-moving
vehicles not exceeding 3 tonnes in wheel-load.

Group 3 - (Class C250)

Used as curb-side grates in heavy vehicle

parking areas and entrances of small precincts.
Generally for slow-moving vehicles not exceeding
5.5 tonnes in wheel-load.

Group 4 - (Class D400)

Carriageways of roads, hard-standing areas for
