Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Today, technological devices are the hottest issue in the society. Technology can
affect life both positively and negatively. New devices always changes our lives and
takes it to a new level. Human life has been totally altered and much bettered with the
advancement of science and technology. But many of us are still wondering on how
these technologies affects the student’s learning and what are good and bad effects of
it.

According to Pew Research center (2010) a mobile phone is one of the most
rapidly growing new technologies in the world. It is a device that can make and
receive calls over a radio link while moving around a wide geographic area. Today’s
mobile phones are packed with different kinds of features such as web browsers,
games, cameras, video players, and even navigational systems. Mobile gadgets also
has a major role in the world today and became a central to learning.

Technology implementation in schools is a must to students’ success post high


school due to the changing times and high demands for tech-savvy personnel. It gives
challenge for the teachers of the 21st century to adjust and use the technological
revolution and also prepares the students for the technological world (Mark Corey,
2013).

Mobile phone is the most adopted gadget by the students nowadays unlike the
old times, students always rely on educational materials such as library, notes, and
books and solve mathematical equations manually just to review and study their
lessons. The usage of technology like mobile gadgets, tablets, and computers has
opened a new way of effective learning and it also plays a critical role in developing

ones individuals’ future and professional career. In our daily lives, dealing with
modern gadgets has a major position. Many of the gadgets have negative effects and
upon the quality of our lives and on how we handle it in some ways, it influence even
though they were built to make life better for us. They are necessarily evil and we
can't live without them in today's generation but we have to find ways to reduce the
impact of those contemporary appliances. A gadget is an appliance having an standard
ambition and action. Gadget is frequently way upgraded of its study in terms of
novelty and standard. This is what makes them so useful and "cool" (Iheng, 2014).

The biggest challenge that the people are facing is to determine how to use the
technology in a good way and to determine the type of future we need to have. The
usage of mobile phones has re-shaped, re-organized and alter several social facets.
Particularly focusing on teenagers’ mobile phone usage, literature has provided
evidence of them being used for both positive purposes and negative reasons.

Technological devises also has a negative effects in the lives of the user. It can
affect the individuals’ personal health, family, social, financial, and academic life.
Over using this technological gadget can affect the mind of an individual. The
individual loses focus or concentration as he/she only concentrates at using the
gadget.

Conceptual Framework
This study is aimed at identifying the effectiveness of the framework of using
technological devices of the Grade 8 and 9 students of University of Perpetual Help
System – Isabela Campus School Year 2019-2020.

The input box consists of the profile of the respondents in terms of the usage of
gadgets of the Junior High school students. Moreover, it also includes the respondents
terms of platforms used in time of spending on the usage of the gadget, learnings.
Likewise, it includes here how the respondents manage their time and responsibility
on using the gadgets.

The process composes of the gathering of data by means of giving survey


questionnaires to the respondents. The data shall be analyzed using the statistical tool
(weighted mean and frequency distribution).

Statement of the problem

This study aims to know the effects of using technological devices in the learning
performance of the grade 8 and 9 students in their subject in Science of the University
of Perpetual Help System Laguna - Isabela Campus School Year 2019-2020.
Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. Gender

b. Age

2. What factors contribute this in learning their Science subject?

3. What is the effects of using gadgets to Junior High school while learning their
Science subject at University of Perpetual Help System – Laguna Isabela Campus?

4. Is there any significant difference between the perception of using gadgets and
students while learning their Science subject?

Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship between using of technological devices and


the learning performance in their subject Science of Grade 8 and 9 students of the
University of Perpetual Help System Laguna - Isabela Campus Academic Year 2019-
2020.

Significance of the study

This study is about the effects of Technological devices in the learning


performance of grade 8 and 9 students in their subject in Science of UPHSL-IC. This
study will benefit the following:

Students
This will benefit the students for they will be more aware on using mobile
gadgets to enhance their learning performance and not to abuse of using them. This
study was also use for the sake of their task and responsibilities they may encounter in
their future when they are also raising their own family. Through this study
technological devices may gain insights on how to enhance the learning in using it. It
may also be a great help to them in improving their skills.
Teachers
This study will also benefit the teachers who also considered this study, for they
will be more aware to the importance of these technological devices to enhance their
performance in teaching. Learning to use it enhances their self-esteem and makes
them excited about coming to school.
Future researcher
To the future researcher, this paper will surely contribute to our rich bulk of
literature and the body of knowledge. Future researchers especially those who will
conduct study on the same or similar framework will gain insights from the substance
of this investigation.

Scope and Delimitation


This study is limited on the effects of using technological devices in their Science
subject of the Junior High school in the University of Perpetual Help System – Isabela
Campus in the year 2019-2020.

This study focuses only to Grade 8 and 9 students of University of Perpetual Help
System Laguna–Isabela Campus in Academic Year 2019-2020 who are using
technological devices are the subject of the investigation. Each student will be given
same set of questionnaire.

This is also limited to the objectives of the study since the researchers only
wanted to determine the effects of using technological devices to the learning
performance of the respondents. The attainment of this study is dependent to the
answers of the respondents. The respondents are composed of 55 students from the
University of Perpetual Help System Laguna–Isabela Campus Academic Year 2019-
2020.

The study will be conducted in this school year 2019-2020. Any changes or
progress in details and updated information beyond the said point are not covered by
the framework of this study.
Definition of terms

Listed below are terms taken from this thesis, which the researcher believe, have
to be defined. This is necessary to enable the future readers of this thesis to easily
understand the contents of this research.

Technological devices. It is any device that helps you to do school work as and also
as for entertainment. This refers to Mobile phones, Tablets, and Computers that is
used by the respondents.

Effects. Define as a change that results when something is done or happens (Merriam-
Webster Dictionary).

Science. It is the study about nature and behavior of natural things and knowledge we
adopt about them.

Junior High School. Students from 8th and 9th grade of the UPHS-IC.

Learning performance. It is the process of gaining knowledge in studying.

21st Century. It is the first century of the 3rd millennium.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

RELATED LITERATURES
Foreign Literatures
Jessica White (2005) said that, technology has completely changed the scope of
education in America. Most states require a technology aspect to their school
improvements plans. They have embraced the idea that using technology in their
classroom makes the subject anything from math to art-more accessible to many kinds
of students. Educators, administrators, parents, and students are so well-versed in
technology that it has become norm in even the most economically disadvantaged
schools. She also stated that controversy exist about some students having access too
much information. Some internet sites are not monitored by educational sources.
Students who have not been taught the proper way to research on the internet might
make a research hypothesis based on a website whose information is untrustworthy.
Educators should be cautious and explain exactly what their expectations to their
students are. Plagiarizing-detection software checks that students aren’t stealing
information in using it as their own research. However, this software wasn’t available
when much of the controversy first became an issue.

According to the National School Boards Association (nsba.org) study (2006),


technology has a large impact on student’s achievement across the subject area
classes.

Shy (2010) says that no one can deny the fact that gadgets have not only
simplified the lives of the individuals but also made them more comfortable,
luxurious and at ease. Indeed, these gadgets really made a huge impact in people’s
lives and became part of it.

A gadget is a small tool or device with a specific useful purpose and function.
Gadgets tend to be more unusual or cleverly designed than normal technology. In
today’s life, tasks are maximized with the use of modern gadgets. It is easier to
accomplish daily tasks and people are also able to do work with efficiency. One
cannot even dare to imagine life without smart phones, cell phones, laptops, tablets,
iPods and so on (Tech Crates, 2012). Today’s gadgets are one of the ways to make
life more comfortable and easier.

Mobile phone has gained immeasurable ground in the lives of students all over
the world. Mobile phones is a common sight today in our schools as you see students
going to school/class with some of the most expensive and sophisticated mobile
phones, tablets, and iPad that has all the applications, facilities and software that can
connect them to the internet and all forms of social media platforms, other web sites
and so on, where they chat, access, stream, download, upload, exchange and play
different kinds of media contents, which most often, are pornographic in nature
(Olofuniyi,Fashiku. & Owombo 2012).

Today’s classrooms are equipped with the latest technology to enhance


instruction. Smartphone use in the classroom is still somewhat controversial, but the
Calgary Board of Education actually encourages it as a learning tool. In an interview
with CTV, Queen’s University National Scholar and Associate Professor Sidney eve
Matrix compared the situation to when calculators were first used by students in the
classroom. “We had a whole new level of computational skill, and now we’re going to
have a whole new level of mobile digital skills when we turn to mobile learning on
the handhelds" says Gammuac (2013).

Technology users are moving towards being more mobile, and teachers and
students are a significant part of that trend. Calgary-based SMART Technologies’
SMART Boards are popular with both teachers and students. Teachers can project
presentations onto the SMART Boards and they can write, touch and interact with
their content. Document cameras are also a fun way for teachers to show students new
and interesting ways of looking at objects. Whether they are zooming in on the
smaller details of a 3D object, or observing science experiments, students can share an
equal view of the lesson–without crowding the teacher’s desk. Whether a student is
listening to his own music while studying, or a teacher is playing an audio book to her
students, mp3 players are an increasingly common sight in schools. Both teachers and
students can make full use of mp3 players in their school activities (Gammuac, 2013).

Technology was made to make our lives easier and more efficient. Although this
can sometimes be considered a bad effect of technology, for the right reasons
efficiency can be considered a good thing. When it comes to a child’s schooling
technology can be a great device to learn from. With the help of technology subjects
are taught in a more fun and exciting way. Kids can take the learning home and learn
while playing games. In the classroom, technology is a great tool for learning in an
efficient manner. It makes it easier for the teachers, as well as the students. In junior
high, students learn how to write more developed essays. With the use of technology
students can research their subject matter and write at the same time. Now, with the
use of laptops, students can also continue working from home. Another important step
in junior high is the arrival of your own cellphone. Social networking is big impact
among preteens and having a cellphone allows you to keep in contact with your
friends while at home. If a student has a question with their homework they can
quickly ask a friend, via text or call. It allows them the freedom to communicate
quickly. Cellphones allow students the ability to research anything anywhere. It is a
mini computer that can fit into your pocket (Meadow Rhodes, 2014).

Local Literatures
The cell phone, now the most widely used medium in Asia, has major educational
implications. Most users, however, do not realize the cell phone's potential for
education, nor even for the communication functions for which it was originally
designed. Most educators still see the computer and the cell phone as unrelated
devices, and the tiny cell phone more as a personal accessory, especially for young
people. With falling prices and increasing functionality, however, it is virtually certain
that not too far in the future all of the world's students will have a cell phone (Angelo
Juan Ramos, 2007).

Smith (2011) presented that 87% of smart phone owners access the internet or
email on their hand held including two thirds or (68%) who do so on a typical day.
Also, 25% of smart phone owners say that they mostly go online using their phone,
rather than say that they mostly go online using their phone rather than with a PC.
This support our assumption on that smart phones replaced PC’s as a mean of access
to the internet.

Not long ago, their only purpose is to receive and send texts messages also, to
initiate and receive phone calls. With the introduction of smart phones, these devices
are now able to increase user experience and productivity through apps. Phones are
now portable computers. This idea gained tremendous attention from developers,
companies, and even educators. “Mobile learning (often “m-learning”) is in itself not
new, but new devices with enhanced capabilities have dramatically increased the
interest level, including among language educators.”(Godwin-Jones, 2011)

Another work by Xinhua(2014), Filipinos are using their mobile phones not only
to communicate but also as mobile computers as well, according to a recent market
study. According to Taylor Nelson Sofres, a global customized research company said
in its report that Filipino consumers are not just using cell phones to call and texting
messages and photos, but also as a means to have "internet- on-the-go," allowing
users to be always online.

According to the Manila Time (2015). Students who spend several hours each day

staring into mobile phones or smart phones tend to change their sleeping habits and stay up

late to use the devices, education ministry research published last week showed.

Excessive mobile phone use has been found to be associated with health
problems. An estimation around 4.5 billion of people using cellphone worldwide
Goswami et al. (2016).

Sato says “When people talk about children using smart phones in a negative
sense, their main concern seems to be about their criminal use, but this study calls the
attention of parents and students to the risk that excessive use of smart phones can
compromise students’ effort to study”. Sato advises the use of smart phones and other
mobile devices be limited to just an hour a day.

Foreign Studies
Technology has eliminated space and time constraints: Online education and
distance learning have given a new dimension to education and higher learning. Even
if students are geographically far away from each other, they can be a part of one

classroom. Though not physically but virtually, they can. Many educational institutes
offer online courses, which eliminates time and space constraints in acquiring
education. Universities offer online educational programs wherein students can
interact with their teachers over the internet, access reference material from the
University website and earns degrees online (trotter 2008).

Those who are eager to learn more about the language learning and necessities of
the next generation, the edited book by Oxford and Oxford (2009), entitled Net
Generation is a must read resource. The book describes empirical studies involving
different innovative technologies and state of the art tools, offering pedagogical ideas
effective statements and usefull suggestions on how these technologies could be
applied to enhance language teaching and learning.

Also educational technology usage in practice teaching can make instruction to be


much more interesting and enjoyable. The changing images and use of special effects
among others can reduce boredom on the part of learners. Furthermore classroom
interaction can be interactive. Technology can promote student-student interaction,
student-teacher interaction, and teacher-student interaction. If pre- instructional
planning incorporates principles such as stimulus vacation feedback, reinforcement
learner participation and so on (Weiner, 2009).

Providing computers to schools increases the technology skills of teacher and


students in both the developed and the developing world. Laptop programs increase
students’ engagement with academic work and school, improve technology skills, and
have positive effects on students’ writing. Research in many nations suggests that
laptop programs will be most successful as part of comprehensive initiatives that also
address changes in educational goals, curricula, teacher training, and assessment
(Zucker & Light 2009).

In the field of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) the term "Net


Generation" has been clearly defined by prensky (2010) who states that Net
Generation members are "digital natives" since they spent their entire lives
surrounded by and using computers, video games, digital music players, video cams,
cellphones and all the other toys and tools of the digital age which make them
different from the baby boomer generation.

According to Taibah University (2017). Their study was conducted on 231


students who is studying physiology during their 2 nd year at one five health collages
they are the (Medicine, Dental, Clinical Pharmacy, Applied Medical Sciences, and
nursing). Their research was an online survey to students regarding to the use of
technology and the devices they use. They study observed a significant relationship
between students use of technology, and the most used device is laptops (50%),
phones (42%), tablets (7%), and the desktop computers (0.5%). The result of their
online survey tells that technology usage might produce comparatively more
significant increase in academic achievements that than would non-usage of
technology.

Local Studies
Bringing the electronic media into the schools could capitalize on the strong
motivation qualities that these media have for children. Many children who are turned
off by school are not turned off by one or another of the electronic media: quite the
opposite. An educational system that capitalized on this motivation would have a
chance of much greater success. Each medium has its own profile of cognitive
advantages and disadvantages, and each medium can be used to enhance the impact of
others. (Chaves, 2008).

The important distinctions between media as a symbol systems and technologies


as tools or vehicles for sharing media will be used through this report. However,
many, if not most, of the research and evaluation studies that are cited in this report
are not informed by this distinction, an inconsistency that is frustrating, but inevitable.
Even people who prepare dictionaries are uncomfortable with the term "media".
Solomon's (2009).

The center for Learning Technologies in Urban Schools is developing a "Living


Curriculum" Collaborative relationship between developers and teachers, initially
through face to face interaction, but increasingly through new interactive media and
the formation of virtual communities for innovation. This evolution into knowledge
networking is crucial for the widespread scaling-up of best practices (Gomez, 2010)

Furthermore, there exist various programs by the government, non-government


organizations and private corporations in the Philippines that aim to provide one
laptop computer per child. With the presence of laptops in the classrooms, students
more became engaged and involved in school-related activities (Oquias, 2011)

According to Ryan T. Gertner (2011),on his study about “The effects of


multimedia technology on learning” he concludes that multimedia gives light on some
possible effects of it to the learning of students. This means that technological devices
may effects the learning performance of a student.

In the Philippines, President Benigno Aquino announced during the launch of the
country’s K-12 curriculum that the government eyes the use of tablet computers in
public schools in lieu of traditional textbooks (Enterprise Innovation, 2012).

According to the study of Jimson Mariano (2017) The Philippine government has
been committed to bring the educational system into a modernized status, particularly
on basic education, in its effort to make each and every student at par with other
students of neighboring developed countries.

Chapter 3
METHOD AND PROCESS OF THE STUDY
In this chapter, the researchers will present a discussion of the method of the

used research, the data gathering tools and procedures.

Research Design
In this study, the researcher will use the Descriptive method using a survey-
questionnaire design developed based on various sources as its data gathering tool to
determine the effectiveness in the effects of using technological devices in learning
and academic performance.
Locale of the study
This study was conducted at the University of Perpetual Help System Laguna-
Isabela Campus located at Cabatuan Road, San Fermin, Cauayan City, Isabela.

Respondents of the study
This study focuses only to 55 students from Grade 8 and 9 of The University of
Perpetual Help System Laguna–Isabela Campus in Academic Year 2019-2020 who
are using Technological devices.

Research Instruments
The main instrument to gather data shall be a survey-questionnaire , this was used
because it gathers data more accurately. It consist of three parts: 1) the demographic

profile of the respondents; 2) the gadgets owned; 3) the number of hours when they
are using it.

The researchers shall hand the questionnaires to respondents and give them time
to think and respond to the questions so that a more truthful response shall be
produced. The researchers will be assisted by their research teacher, adviser and the
science teacher of grade 8 and 9 students.

Data-Gathering Procedure
The researchers first finalized the questionnaire. Before the questionnaires were
administered to the Junior High school students of the University of Perpetual Help
System-Laguna – Isabela Campus, the approval and permission was requested from
the School Principal of the Basic Education Department through a letter. After the
approval of the request letter, the questionnaires were given to the student-
respondents. The information provided by the student-respondents were organized,
and tabulated for analysis.

Statistical Tool
For the analysis of the collected data, the following statistical tools were used:
1. Frequency and percentage for the tabulation of the estimated time of using
technological devices per day in their subject Science
2. Weighted mean for the perception of using technological devices to Junior High
School students while studying Science subject

Ethics
The data gathered by the researchers for this study from the selected students and
teachers were treated with confidentiality. Their privacy and protection were
prioritized.

Purpose
Although the mobile phone has been conspicuously proliferated in the past decades,

little is known about its influence; especially its effect on student learning and academic

performance. Although there is a growing interest in mobile devices and their correlates

and consequences for children, effects vary across related studies and the magnitude of

the overall effect remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to further examine any

relationships that may exist between mobile phone use and educational achievement.

Research design
A meta-analysis of research conducted on the relationship between mobile phone use

and student educational outcomes over a 10-year period (2008–2017) was conducted.

The operational definition of cell phone use to guide the implementation of this study is:

any measure of mobile phone use, whether considered normative or problematic, that

quantifies the extent to which a person uses a phone, feels an emotional or other

dependence on a phone, or categorizes the types of uses and situations in which use

occurs. Studies examining use for the express purpose of educational improvement are

not included, as the aim of this study is to ascertain the effects of normal smartphone

use. The operational definition of academic achievement to guide the implementation of

this study is: any measure that quantifies the extent to which a student or group of

students is performing or feels he or she is performing to a satisfactory level, including

but not limited to letter grades and test scores, knowledge and skill acquisition, and self-

reported measures of academic ability or difficulty.

Foreign Studies
This research work by Soyemi J., Oloruntoba, S.A. & Okafor B., examined phone usage

andidentified the effects internet-enabled mobile phones have on the academic

performance of students atthe tertiary institutions using the Federal Polytechnic

students of Ilaro, Ogun State in Nigeria as a casestudy. The research work was

performed so as to understand and also find the correlation between theacademic

performance of students and the usage of the mobile phone during class hours which

isgenerally believed to be an avenue of distractions to students. The information from

this work wascarried out using structured questionnaires administered to 45 students to

get their individual views. Inaddition, 15 extensive interviews were done concurrently to

have a grounded knowledge of the studentswith the data gathered during the course of

this study. Our findings indicated that students are influencednegatively to a great

extent by the mobile phone because attention is focused on chatting, music, andothers

while their academic activities are neglected and left to suffer. Also, this study

discovered that theuse of mobile phone is uncontrollable among students which are the

leading cause of poor academic performance among students.
