Road Accident Statics

 India has only 1 % of world vehicle population

 Accounts for 6 % of the accidents

 10 % fatalities due to road traffic injuries

 36 % are due to over speeding At Indus:

40% of fatalities due to road accidents
Contributing factor of road accidents

 Driving over the speed limit

 Driving under the influence

 Not using helmets and seat belts

FACT: Reducing your speed by 2 Kmph will reduce the chance of an accident by 5 %

What is defensive driving?
Defensive Driving:

It is a set of driving skills that allows you to defend

yourself against:

 possible collisions caused by bad drivers

 drunk drivers

 poor weather.

If you look ahead and keep your eyes moving, you

will spot potential hazards more easily. Once you

have identified a potential hazard and decided what

to do, act immediately.

Don't make assumptions about another drivers intentions.

… why can`t YOU wear one ?

USE YOUR HEAD – WEAR A HELMET !

• Riders without helmets are 10 times more likely to need brain surgery

• Death is reduced by 38 %.

• Helmets do not restrict hearing or vision to the extent that it affects your riding safety.

• The most vulnerable area of your head is the front - controls the ability to process
information, solve problems; concentrate, remember & learn. Damage here can lead to
personality changes that manifest in impulsive and socially inappropriate behaviour,
depression and violence.

Ridding Helmet Specification
Why Wear A Safety Helmet?
A safety helmet is one of the most important items of personal protective equipment used by motorcycle riders primarily to
protect the head against impact.
Components of the Helmet and Their Roles
The Shell:
 It absorbs energy in an impact.
 It distributes local forces from an impact
 It allows sliding on road surfaces
 It protects the face and temples
The Protective Padding:
 It provides a stopping distance for the head.
 The foam can compress by 90% during an
impact, although it recovers partially
afterwards. Proper Strapping System:
 Padding helps increase the stopping distance It is essential to wear a well-fitting helmet for the effective working of
thus reducing the peak deceleration of the
chinstrap system. To test if the helmet fits your head properly, tightly

 Padding protects as much as possible of the fasten the chinstrap and then pull helmet off forward by gripping the rear

harness.

Only Safety
Harnesses shall be
used
Full Body Safety Harness

Full Body Harness/Safety Harness

 A full body harness is a common

fall arrest system used when no
fall prevention methods are
available.

 A full body harness stops a fall

in progress and minimizes the
force of the fall to your body.

 Waist belts are not allowed

because a fall will usually result
in injury.
Full Body Harness: Double Lanyard

Lanyards
 The purpose of a lanyard
assembly is to connect a harness
to an anchorage point, horizontal
life line or rail, or other acceptable
form of anchorage
 Lanyards fitted with a shock
absorber should only be used at
heights above 6 meters
 Retractable reels are fitted to the
D Ring on the rear of the Safety
Harness and connected either to
a Horizontal static line or anchor
point
Putting Full Body Safety Harness (cont..)

STEP-1: Hold the harness by the back

D-ring. Shake the harness to allow all
straps to fall in place.
STEP-2: If Chest, Waist/Leg straps are
buckled, release straps and unbuckle
them.
Step-1 Step-2
STEP-3: Slip the straps over shoulders Step-3 Step-4
so the D-ring is located in middle of the
back between shoulder blades.

STEP-4: Pull the leg strap between

legs and connect to the opposite end.
Repeat with other leg. If belted
harness, connect waist strap after leg
straps.
Putting Full Body Safety Harness

Step-5 Step-6

STEP-6: After all straps have

STEP-5: Connect the chest strap and been buckled, tighten all
position in the mid-chest area. Tighten buckles so the harness fits
to keep the shoulder straps taut snugly but allows full range of
movement. Pass excess strap
through loop keepers
Inspection : Full Body Safety Harness
Prior to use (Cont…)

Inspecting D Rings & Snap hooks

• Inspect metal components for cracks
or other defects. Replace the harness
if the "D" ring is not at a 90° angle
and does not move vertically
independent of the body pad or "D"
saddle.
• Inspect snap hooks open and close –
confirm they lock when closed.
• Check for thread separation or rotting,
both inside and outside on securing
loops for d ring and snap hooks.
• Inspect snaps for hook and eye
distortions, cracks, corrosion, or pitted
surfaces.
Inspection : Full Body Safety Harness
Prior to use

Common Defects - Safety

Harnesses & Lanyards
• Chemical damage to webbing
• Cut, twisted webbing
• Damage connections
As per Indus Procedure to Work at Height :
1) Always use a full body double lanyard Body Harness that confirms to
EN361:2002 and EN 358:2000
2) The Carabiner should be Hook Type and not screw type
3) Always anchor the harness to the tower member
