The list of firsts for the Wildcats during the 2021 season is a long one from a Regional HS grad
program-defining season which began with uncertainty amidst national and local
surges in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. Orchard and her Villanova • Playing: LHP at
team persevered through the year to emerge with a 37-15 record, the program’s Miss. St., averaged
first-ever BIG EAST title and a berth in an NCAA regional for the first time in 6.52 strikeouts per
school history. The Wildcats traveled to Arizona and defeated UMBC for the first seven innings
NCAA Tournament victory in the program’s 45 years as a varsity sport. Follow-
ing that would be no easy feat, as Orchard and the ‘Cats began the year as the
favorites to take home the BIG EAST crown. Her VU squad went 32-24 in 2022, ATHLETIC TRAINER VICTORIA RE
including an 11-5 mark at the Villanova Softball Complex. The Wildcats won each
of their first two rounds, and proceeded to take down Connecticut in the final for • 2nd Season at VU

VILLANOVA SOFTBALL
• This is the 48th season of varsity softball for the Wildcats, who have not
missed a BIG EAST Championship game in five years under this coaching
staff. The back-to-back conference title winners in 2021 and 2022, Villa-
nova is coming off its second runner-up season in the Bridget Orchard
era and looks to return to the league’s title game this year to continue the
dominance. The softball program was formed during the 1970s and it is
believed that 1977 was the first year of varsity competition, although the
fledgling Wildcats had an official roster and played games prior to the
1977 season. Using that year as a starting point, the program’s all-time
record entering the 2024 season is 1,085-913-13 (.543). Since 2019 and the
start of the Orchard VU head coaching era, the Wildcats have compiled the
most overall (148) and BIG EAST wins (58) of any program in the league.
ELAINA IS EXCELLING
• One of the biggest positives for the Wildcats in 2024 has been the play of
junior Elaina Wagner, who has burst onto the scene after playing scarcely
through her first two years on the Main Line. The New York native has
been Villanova’s best hitter in BIG EAST play, owning a .391 batting aver-
age with a team-high 18 hits and having base knocks in 14 of the 15 games.
The utility player, who came to VU as a middle infielder but has shifted
into right field this season after the graduation of two starting outfielders,
maintains a team-best 21-game reached base streak and also leads the way
for the ‘Cats with 10 doubles on the year.
LIVING BY THE LONG BALL
• As has become tradition under head coach Bridget Orchard and hitting
coach Gabby Luety, the Wildcats are built on power. So far in 2024, Vil-
lanova has already blasted 48 dingers, which ties for fourth in program
history for a single season with 10 games still to play. The ‘Cats are averag-
ing 1.20 homers per game, leading the conference and 22nd in the nation.
And it’s been coming from everyone, with six players belting five or more
bombs and first career tanks coming off the bats of five Wildcats. Villano-
va’s power came to a head in the 17-5 victory at Providence on March 17,
where five players sent balls out of the yard, and against St. John’s with a
quartet of two-run bombs in the same game.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL
Since 1842, Villanova University’s Augustinian Cath-
olic intellectual tradition has been the cornerstone of
an academic community in which students learn to
think critically, act compassionately and succeed while

VILLANOVA ATHLETICS
Villanova University has a long and storied athletics
history defined by excellence both in competition and
in the classroom. The Villanova Athletics Department
is a community of student athletes, coaches and staff
whose primary focus is to achieve academic excellence,
while striving to produce teams and individuals com-
mitted to athletic competition and outstanding perfor-
mance. Villanova Athletics sponsors 24 varsity sports,
which together include more than 550 student-athletes.
In the classroom, these Villanova student-athletes have
registered a grade-point average higher than a 3.0 for
37 consecutive semesters. Three Villanova student-ath-
letes have been named Rhodes Scholars, with numer-
ous others earning Academic All-America distinction.
Villanova’s athletics history includes 21 NCAA team
national championships as well as 128 conference
championships and hundreds of individual conference
champions. At least one Villanovan has participated
in every Summer Olympics since 1948. Villanova is a
member of the BIG EAST Conference, CAA Football,
Colonial Athletic Association (Rowing) and Metro
Atlantic Athletic Conference (Water Polo).
ACADEMICS
Villanova had 14 of its varsity programs earn NCAA
public recognition awards in May 2020 for having a
multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) score that
ranked within the top 10 percent of their sport nation-
wide. This was the fourth straight year that Villanova
had 14 or more of its teams recognized, while the 14
awards in 2020 put the Wildcats in the top 10 nationally
and atop the BIG EAST for number of teams recog-
nized. The most recent academic data to be announced
was the November release of the NCAA Graduation
Success Rate (GSR). Villanova earned its highest rate
ever with a 98 percent GSR score, while 12 sports
programs posted a 100 percent rate in the most recent
data. The softball program had a 94 percent GSR in the
NCAA calculation in the latest data released.
