Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 7 Self-Learning Module on Addition of

Integers!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

RECAP

Answer the following questions briefly.

1. What is an absolute value of a number?
2. What is the opposite of 125?
3. How far is -50 from 0 on the number line?
4. On the number line, what is 3 units on the left of -1?
5. Which has greater value |-29| or -30?

LESSON
In this self-learning module lesson, we will be exploring how to add integers.
The step by step process of adding integers are included in this module. Enough
examples and exercises are presented to facilitate learning.

Read and analyze the following problems.

1. To maintain social distancing in the entrance of a supermarket, Hans moved 2

steps forward. A man behind him moved closer to him so he decided to move 5
steps forward again. How many forward steps did Hans execute?
Let us represent 2 steps forward as 2 and 5 steps forward as 5

ꚚꚚ + ꚚꚚꚚꚚꚚ = ꚚꚚꚚꚚꚚꚚꚚ Since there are 7 positive

chips
2 + 5 = 7 therefore, Hans moves 7 steps forward.

2. Timothy borrowed Php 2 from his younger sister last week. He borrowed again
Php 5 from his younger sister this week. How much did he borrow in all?
Let us represent borrowed 2 as -2 and borrowed 5 as -5

ӨӨ + ӨӨӨӨӨ = ӨӨӨӨӨӨӨ Since there are 7 negative chips and

-2 + -5 = -7 negative can represents debt, therefore
Timothy borrowed a total of Php 7.00

RULE 1: To add integers with the same sign, add the absolute value of the
numbers then copy the common sign.

3. Luigi got a perfect score of 5 points in his seatwork yesterday. However, since he
was noisy in the class during that period, his teacher deducted 2 points from
his score. What was Luigi’s final score on his seatwork?
Let us represent perfect score as 5 and deduction of 2 as -2

ꚚꚚꚚꚚꚚ + ӨӨ = ꚚꚚꚚ Since we crossed out 2 zero pairs.

5 + -2 = 3 Thus, 3 positive chips remain.

Therefore, Luigi got 3 points in his
seatwork

4. There were 5 COVID-19 infected individuals in a certain barangay in Pasig. But

after two weeks, 2 of them recovered from the virus. How many were still
infected by COVID-19 after two weeks?
Let us represent 5 infected by -5 and 2 recovered by 2
ӨӨӨӨӨ + ꚚꚚ = ӨӨӨ Since we crossed out 2 zero pairs.

-5 + 2 = -3 Thus, 3 negative chips remain

Therefore, 3 of them are still infected by
COVID-19

RULE 2: To add integers with different signs, subtract the absolute value of the
numbers then copy the sign of the number with higher absolute value.

More Examples:

Find the sum of the given integers

1. 46 + 4 + 28 = 78 Add 46, 4 and 28. Since all the integers

are positive so the sum is 78.

2. -17 + -12 = -29 Add 17 and 12. Since all the integers are
negative so the sum is -29.

3. – 120 + 72 = -48 |-120| = 120 and |72| = 72; subtract

120 – 72 = 48 since |-120| > |72|, copy
the sign of -120, so the sum is -48.

4. -65 + 165 = 100 |-65| = 65 and |165| = 165; subtract

165 – 65 = 100 since |165| > |-65|, copy
the sign of 165, so the sum is 100.

ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITY 1: LET’S PRACTICE

Directions: Match Column A with the correct sum in Column B. Write only the
letter of the correct answer on the space provided before each number.

Column A Column B

1. 42 + 30 A. 44

2. 108 + -64 B. 96

3. 12 + 48 + 36 C. 200
4. -7 + -40 + -13 D. 72

5. -240 + 400 E. -60

F. 160

ACTIVITY 2: KEEP PRACTICING

Direction: Add the following integers.

1. (30 + 20) + 40 =
2. (-75 + -25) + 50 =
3. (-40 + -30) + (50 + 20) =
4. (36 + -16) + (-12 + 2) =
5. (125 + 25) + (-80 + -20) =

ACTIVITY 3: TEST YOURSELF

Directions: Solve each of the following problems. Show your solutions.

1. Every summer, our temperature gradually rises. On the first week of April there
is a rise of 5 °C and was followed by a another rise of 4 °C by the last week of
April. What is the total rise in temperature for the whole month of April?
2. During the PANDEMIC crisis, Mrs. Cruz withdrew Php 12 000 for the month of
March to buy their basic needs. She withdraw again Php 9 000 for the month of
April for additional budget. How much is the total withdrawal in two months?
3. Roselle received Php 8 000 from DSWD as one of the beneficiaries of the Social
Amelioration Program ( SAP ) during the Enhanced Community Quarantine
(ECQ). She spent Php 4 200 for groceries and marketing and saved the rest.
How much did she save?
4. Guivere gained 5 stars against Layla on the first battle. On her second battle,
she lost 4 stars from Lunox. And lastly, she won 3 stars against Miya. How
many stars were left to Guivere?
5. Ginger, a COVID-19 patient, was confined in a hospital. She weighed 63 kg.
When she got sick she lost 3kg the on first week and 4 kg on the second week.
When she recoverd, she gained 1 kg on the third week and 2 kg on the fourth
week. What was her weight after 1 month?

WRAP UP

Remember that…
 To add integers with the same sign, add their absolute values and copy the
common sign in the answer.
 The sum of two or more positive numbers is a positive number.
 The sum of two or more negative numbers is a negative number.
 To add integers with different signs, find the difference between their absolute
values and use the sign of the integer with the larger absolute value in the
answer.
 The terms plus, added to, added by, increased by, sum of, and more than
indicate addition.

VALUING
Reflections: (Journal Writing)

In adding integers, (+) + (+) = (+) and (-) + (-) = (-). In math, when we have
savings it is represented by a positive integer and debt it is represented by a
negative integer. Of course, it is a very good habit to save money so that in time of
emergency we have something to use. On a separate sheet of paper, write down
some reasons why saving could be our additional weapon in facing crisis like
typhoon, earthquake, volcanic eruption and now COVID-19 pandemic.
