IMPLICATION OF SYNTAX IN THE PEDAGOGY AND ANDRAGOGY

Bautista, Angel-Lou Q.

Introduction

Semantics is about the study of meaning, while syntax is the study of sentence
structure. In this study, the learners would break down the sentence into pieces to know the
forms. To be able to comprehend the sentence, the reader must process it, and the sentence
itself should be grammatical to avoid misinterpretation or ambiguity. Syntax refers to the
word order to form a sentence. Knowing the relationships of each word in grammar while
reading writing or composing orally will help the student to be understood by their chosen
audience.

Discussion

The use of sentence elaboration will help the students to use and manipulate the
number of words in a sentence. It helps to develop syntactic awareness for forming verb
phrases, noun phrases, and prepositional phrases. The sentence elaboration has six questions
that consist: of who, what, where, why, when, and how. By using these questions, the learners
will be able to comprehend the sentence. As a future educator who will be teaching children
and adolescents, implicating syntax in my teaching will help me to teach effectively.

As a teacher, I will be teaching orally in the future; my goal is to increase my

learners’ reading comprehension and form sentences grammatically. In that case, it is
important for my grammar to always sound right to my students; as being grammatical should
start with me, so my students will be able to understand what I am discussing. Applying the
syntax in my teaching enhances my vocabulary as well as my students. Therefore, not every
child or even adult can provide a good sentence with the correct arrangement. Since there
may be two or more meanings within a sentence–these things matter most when learning
English; they must know where to put or arrange the noun or the verb to be an effective
communicator. People in our country struggle with what words they can add to convey their
message which must also be related to the word. Based on the researchers of the research it is
more effective to teach learners early by correcting them using their ungrammatical
structured sentences than teaching them the rules of the sentence individually.

Conclusion

Implicating syntax in English teaching will improve the student's vocabulary and
comprehension by the correct form of grammar. It can also help them to comprehend the
message correctly if they know how to arrange words to form sentences. Initially, building
the learners’s grammatical and syntactic awareness at an early age will help them enhance the
usage and relationships of each word. Accordingly, by adolescent age, they can detect errors
in their sentence arrangement and can read a book impressively. The teachers will be able to
know how they can guide their students and what are their weaknesses.
