PLEASE NOTE: If you have not done so already, download my PERSUASIVE LANGUAGE

your students might find useful to have when attempting these worksheets!

Description: This worksheet requires students to write their own examples of persuasive language

techniques. You may wish to go through the different techniques first (or hand out the above
Writing

mentioned free handout), or instruct students to look up any techniques they do not know.
Ideas for Use: I often use this as part of an introduction to persuasive language techniques, as it really
gets students engaging with each of the 20 chosen techniques as they have to put them into practice. I
usually set this as a paired task in class so that they cannot just Google examples!
Description: This worksheet requires students to think about how persuasive language is used in
Persuasive Language
In An Advertisement

advertising. The worksheet provides the image for an advert, and students are required to write the
accompanying text.
Ideas for Use: I would use this worksheet as part of a lesson on persuasive language in advertising. I
would ask students to bring in an advert from a magazine, and then in pairs instruct them to analyze
the techniques of persuasion used. Then we would move onto this exercise – again working in pairs.
*** Please Note: There are TWO pages to this activity: the first page is instructions; the second is
the advert. I usually print it double-sided; as the instructions are unnecessary once the activity is
completed and stuck in books. Ideally print in color, but black and white would also work.
Description: This worksheet requires students to re-write sentences, making them more persuasive.
Being More
Persuasive

They are required to use a range of persuasive language techniques.

Ideas for Use: I often use this worksheet as a homework task to test students’ knowledge. However, it
can be used in class as an individual task after a revision on the different persuasive techniques used
in writing.
Description: This worksheet requires students to write short paragraphs in response to different
scenarios, using specified persuasive techniques.
Writing To
Persuade

Ideas for Use: This works well as an individual task, or for homework. However, once completed I
have students swap their worksheet with a partner and that person has to underline where the
techniques have been used. This is one way of checking if the techniques were all employed.
*** Please Note: There are TWO pages to this activity. I often only give out the first page, and
then use the second page for extension work / early finishers.
Description: This worksheet helps students to plan a short persuasive speech. There is a planning
Short Speech

process included, although students are required to write the final version in their notebooks or
Writing a

on lined paper.
Ideas for Use: I often set this task after we have studied persuasive language for a considerable
amount of time, as students do need to have a good understanding of all techniques. I often start the
lesson by playing video clips of political speeches, or a good TED talk. We then discuss how/why that
speech was persuasive.

Description: This worksheet requires students to find a commercial (one they have seen on TV, or
Pathos & Logos in a

they can find one online), and then fill in this worksheet in an attempt to analyze how ethos, pathos and

logos are used.

Ideas for Use: This exercise does require students to do some investigation and individual work.
Therefore, I usually set this as a homework task. It can also be extended into a presentation in which
students present their analysis to the class / to a small group.
