Year 8
Part 1 – Vos’s working out
Vos is planning on updating his bedroom with a new bed and desk, but he wants to see how it all fits in
first. He draws a scale drawing using a ratio of 1:20; where 1 centimetre on his drawing represents 20
centimetres in his bedroom. You are also going to do a bedroom update, but with a different sized room
and different furniture.

 Room = 3 metres wide, 3 metres long.  Room = 3.5 metres wide, 4 metres long.
 Bed (King Single) = 106 cm wide, 203 cm  Bed (double) = 138 cm wide, 188 cm long.

 Desk = 110 cm long, 55 cm wide.  Mat = 120 cm long, 90 cm wide.
 Rug = 80 cm wide, 120 cm long.  Wardrobe = 160 cm long, 80 cm wide.
 Wardrobe = 75 cm wide, 150 cm long.

Question 1a) - Scale drawing calculations

The scale you are using for your drawing is 1:20; where 1 centimetre on the drawing represents
20 centimetres in the bedroom. Work out the dimensions that you will use in your scale
drawing.

Question 1b) - Scale drawing

Make a plan of the bedroom using the scale drawing calculations from part 1a). The ‘bed’ and
‘space to open cupboard’ must be included, but the other items may or may not fit. Can
everything fit? If not, what did you choose to leave out?

Question 1d) - Painting the desk top.

The top of your desk needs painting. It will need 3 coats of paint. If 1 litre of paint covers 6
square metres, work out how much paint you will need to paint the desk top.
