y and 2x - y = 4. [CBSE 2014]
Sol:- Here, x+6=y...(1)
and 2x y=4.......(2)
From eq.(1), substituting the value of y in eq. (2), we obtain
2x-(x+6)=4
2x-x-6=4
⇒ x=10
From eq. (1), we obtain y=10+6-16
Q-3 Find the value of x+y, if 3x-2y= 5 and 3y - 2x = 3.
[CBSE 2014]

and -2x+3y=3...........(2)
On adding eqs. (1) and (2), we get
x+y=8
Q-4 The cost of 2 kg of apples and 1kg of grapes on a day was
found to be Rs.160. After a month, the cost of 4 kg of apples and 2
kg of grapes is Rs.300. Represent the situation algebraically.
Sol:- Let the cost of 1 kg of apples be ‘Rs. x’.
And, let the cost of 1 kg of grapes be ‘Rs. y’.
According to the question, the algebraic representation is

Q-5 Half the perimeter of a rectangular garden, whose length is 4
m more than its width, is 36 m. Find the dimensions of the
garden. [NCERT EXEMPLAR]
Sol:- Given, half the perimeter of a rectangular garden = 36 m
so, 2(l + b)/2 = 36
(l + b) = 36 ……….(1)
Given, the length is 4 m more than its width.
Let width = x
And length = x + 4
Substituting this in eq(1), we get;
x + x + 4 = 36
2x + 4 = 36
2x = 32
x = 16
Therefore, the width is 16 m and the length is 16 + 4 = 20 m.
Q-6 On comparing the ratios a1/a2, b1/b2, and c1/c2, find out
whether the following pair of linear equations are consistent, or
inconsistent.
(i) 3x + 2y = 5 ; 2x – 3y = 7 [CBSE 2019]
Sol:- Given : 3x + 2y = 5 or 3x + 2y – 5 = 0
and 2x – 3y = 7 or 2x – 3y – 7 = 0
Comparing the above equations with a1x + b1y + c1=0
And a2x + b2y + c2 = 0
We get,
a1 = 3, b1 = 2, c1 = -5
a2 = 2, b2 = -3, c2 = -7
a1/a2 = 3/2, b1/b2 = 2/-3, c1/c2 = -5/-7 = 5/7

Since, a1/a2 b1/b2 the lines intersect each other at a point and
have only one possible solution.
Hence, the equations are consistent.
Q-7 Solve the following pair of linear equations by the
substitution method.
(i) x+y = 14 x–y = 4
Sol:- Given,
x + y = 14 and x – y = 4 are the two equations.
From 1st equation, we get,
x = 14 – y
Now, put the value of x in second equation to get,
(14 – y) – y = 4
14 – 2y = 4
2y = 10
Or y = 5
By the value of y, we can now find the value of x;
∵ x = 14 – y
∴ x = 14 – 5
Or x = 9 Hence, x = 9 and y = 5.
Q-8 Solve 2x + 3y = 11 and 2x – 4y = – 24 and hence find the value
of ‘m’ for which y = mx + 3. [CBSE 2020]
Sol:- 2x + 3y = 11…………………………..(i)
2x – 4y = -24………………………… (ii)
From equation (i), we get;
x = (11 – 3y)/2 ……….…………………………..(iii)
Putting the value of x in equation (ii), we get
2[(11 – 3y)/2] – 4y = −24
11 – 3y – 4y = -24
-7y = -35
y = 5……………………………………..(iv)
Putting the value of y in equation (iii), we get;
x = (11 – 15)/2 = -4/2 = −2
Hence, x = -2, y = 5
Also, y = mx + 3
5 = -2m +3
-2m = 2
m = -1. Therefore, the value of m is -1.
Q-9 The sum of digits of a two-digit number is 11. The number
obtained by interchanging the digits of the given number exceeds
that number by 63. Find the number. [CBSE 2011,17]
Sol:- Let ten's digit be x and unit digit be y. Number = 10x + y
According to the statement of the question, we have
x+y=11
and 10x+y+63 =10y+x.........(1)
9x-9y=-63
Solving eqs. (1) and (2), we get
2x=4
x=2
From eq. (1), we get
2+y=11 y=9
Number = 10(2)+9=20+9=29
Hence, the number is 29.
Q-10 A father's age is three times the sum of the ages of his two
children. After 5 years his age will be two times the sum of their
ages. Find the present age of the father. [CBSE. 2019 (30/1/1)]
Sol:- Let father's age be x years and the sum of ages of his
children's ages be y years.
x = 3y ...(i)
After 5 years Father's age = (x + 5) years Sum of his children's age =
y +5+5=(y+10) years
According to question,
x+5=2(y + 10)
x+5=2+20
⇒ 3y+5=2y+20
⇒ 3y-2=20-5
⇒ y = 15 [From (i)]
(Putting) = 15 in equation (i), we get x=3y = 3x 15 = 45
.. Father's age = 45 years
Q-11 The coach of a cricket team buys 7 bats and 6 balls for
Rs.3800. Later, she buys 3 bats and 5 balls for Rs.1750. Find the
cost of each bat and each ball. [R.D Sharma]
Sol:- Let the cost of a bat be x and the cost of a ball be y.
According to the question,
7x + 6y = 3800 ………………. (i)
3x + 5y = 1750 ………………. (ii)
From (i), we get;
y = (3800 – 7x)/6 …………………… (iii)
Substituting (iii) in (ii). we get,
3x + 5[(3800 – 7x)/6] = 1750
⇒ 3x + (9500/3) – (35x/6) = 1750
3x – (35x/6) = 1750 – (9500/3)
(18x – 35x)/6 = (5250 – 9500)/3
⇒ -17x/6 = -4250/3
⇒ -17x = -8500
⇒-17x = -8500
x = 500
Putting the value of x in (iii), we get;
y = (3800 – 7 × 500)/6 = 300/6 = 50
Hence, the cost of a bat is Rs 500 and the cost of a ball is Rs 50.
Q-12 A fraction becomes 9/11 if 2 is added to both the numerator
and the denominator. If, 3 is added to both the numerator and the
denominator it becomes 5/6. Find the fraction.
Sol:- Let the fraction be x/y.
According to the question,
(x + 2)/(y + 2) = 9/11
11x + 22 = 9y + 18
11x – 9y = -4 …………….. (1)
(x + 3)/(y + 3) = 5/6
6x + 18 = 5y +15
6x – 5y = -3 ………………. (2)
From (1), we get
x = (-4 + 9y)/11 …………….. (3)
Substituting the value of x in (2), we get
6[(-4 + 9y)/11] – 5y = -3
-24 + 54y – 55y = -33
-y = -9
y = 9 ………………… (4)
Substituting the value of y in (3), we get
x = (-4 + 81)/11 = 77/11 = 7
Hence, the fraction is 7/9.
Q-13 Solve the equations x + 2y – 4 = 0 and 2x + 4y – 12 = 0
graphically. [R.D Sharma]
Sol:- Given,
x + 2y – 4 = 0….(i)
2x + 4y – 12 = 0….(ii)
From (i),
x + 2y = 4
2y = 4 – x
y = (4 – x)/2
From (ii),
2x + 4y = 12
x + 2y = 6
2y = 6 – x
y = (6 – x)/2
Plotting the points on the graph, we get;

Q-14 Find the value of 𝑘 for which the following pair of linear
equations have infinitely many solutions:
2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 7; (𝑘 − 1)𝑥 + (𝑘 + 2)𝑦 = 3𝑘 CBSE 2010, Delhi (30/1/1)
Sol:- Given, the pair of linear equations are
kx + 3y = k - 3
12x + ky = k
We have to determine the value of k for which the pair of linear
equations will have no solution.
We know that,
For a pair of linear equations in two variables be a₁x + b₁y + c₁ = 0
and a₂x + b₂y + c₂ = 0,

If a1/a2=b1/b2 c1/c2, then the graph will be a pair of parallel lines
and so the pair of equations will have no solution.
Here, a₁ = k, b₁ = 3, c₁ = k - 3
a₂ = 12, b₂ = k, c₂ = k
So, a₁/a₂ = k/12
b₁/b₂ = 3/k
c₁/c₂ = (k - 3)/k
For no solution,

a1/a2=b1/b2 c1/c2
So, k/12 = 3/k ≠ (k - 3)/k
Case 1) k/12 = 3/k
k(k) = 3(12)
k(k) = 3(12)
k2 = 36
k = ±6
Case 2) 3/k ≠ (k - 3)/k
3(k)≠ k(k - 3)
3k ≠ k2 - 3k
k2 - 3k - 3k≠ 0
k2 - 6k ≠ 0
k(k - 6)≠ 0
So, k = 6, 0
Therefore, for the value of k = -6, the pair of linear equations have
no solution
Q-15 For which value(s) of k will the pair of equations kx + 3y = k -
3; 12x + ky = k have no solution CBSE 2010, Delhi (30/1/1)
Sol:- Given, the pair of linear equations are
kx + 3y = k - 3
12x + ky = k
We have to determine the value of k for which the pair of linear
equations will have no solution.
We know that,
For a pair of linear equations in two variables be a₁x + b₁y + c₁ = 0
and a₂x + b₂y + c₂ = 0,

If a1/a2=b1/b2 c1/c2, then the graph will be a pair of parallel lines
and so the pair of equations will have no solution.
Here, a₁ = k, b₁ = 3, c₁ = k - 3
a₂ = 12, b₂ = k, c₂ = k
So, a₁/a₂ = k/12
b₁/b₂ = 3/k
c₁/c₂ = (k - 3)/k
For no solution,

a1/a2=b1/b2 c1/c2
So, k/12 = 3/k ≠ (k - 3)/k
Case 1) k/12 = 3/k
k(k) = 3(12)
k2 = 36
k = ±6
Case 2) 3/k ≠ (k - 3)/k
3(k)≠ k(k - 3)

Q-24 Akhila went to a fair in her village. She wanted to enjoy rides
on the Giant Wheel and play Hoopla (a game in which you throw
a rig on the items in the stall, and if the ring covers any object
completely, you get it). The number of times she played Hoop
9la is half the number of rides she had on the giant wheel. Each
ride costs ₹3, and a game of hoopla costs ₹4. If she spent ₹20 in the
fair, represent this situation algebraically and graphically.
Sol:- Let ‘x’ be the number of rides Akhila had on the giant
wheel.
And, let ‘y’ be the number of times she played Hoopla.
From the question, we can write the below pair of equations.
y = (1/2)x⇒ x -2y = 0……. (i)
3x + 4y = 20……. (ii)
To represent these equations graphically, we need at least two
solutions for each (i) and (ii).
And let’s put them on a table for each.
For equation (i),

For equation (ii),

When:
The solution of the variable is zero; the equation can be solved
easily. Putting x =0 in equation (ii), we get

4y = 20 y = 5
Similarly putting y = 0 in equation (ii), we get

3x = 20 x = 20/3, but it is not an integer, so it is not easy to plot
on graph paper.
So, we chose y=2, which gives x =4 as an integer value.
The above can be plotted in a graph as below:
Q-25 Aftab tells his daughter, “Seven years ago, I was seven times

algebraically.
To represent these equations graphically, we need at least two
solutions for each (i) and (ii).
And let’s put them on a table for each.
For equation (i),

For equation (ii)

The above can be plotted in a graph as below:

Q-26 The path of train A is given by the equation 3x+4y-12 =0,
and the path of another train B is given by the equation 6x+8y-48
=0. Represent this situation graphically. [CBSE 2018]
Sol:- Given pair of linear equations which represents the paths of
train A and train B,
3x + 4y – 12 = 0………………………….. (i)
6x + 8y – 48 = 0 ………………………….. (ii)
To represent these equations graphically, we need at least two
solutions for each (i) and (ii).
And let’s put them on a table for each.
For equation (i),

For equation (ii)

The above can be plotted in a graph as below:

Q-27 Solve the following system of equations graphically:

x+y=6
x–y=2 [CBSE 2019]
Sol:- x + y = 6……. (i)
x – y = 2……. (ii)
For equation (i),
⇒ y = (6 – x)
When x = 2, we have y = (6 – 2)) = 4
When x = 3, we have y = (6 – 3) = 3
Thus we have the following table giving points on the line x + y = 6
For equation (ii),
We solve for y:
⇒ y = (x – 2)
So, when x = 2
y = (0 – 2) = -2
And, when x = 5
⇒ y = (2 – 2) = 0
Thus we have the following table giving points on the line x–y = 2

Graph of the equations (i) and (ii) is as below

Clearly, the two lines intersect at a single point P (4, 2).

Hence, x= 4 and y = 2
Q-28 Determine graphically the vertices of the triangle, the
equations of whose sides are given below.
2y – x = 8, 5y – x = 14 and y – 2x = 1 [R.D SHARMA]
Sol:- Given,
2y – x = 8……. (i)
5y – x = 14……. (ii)
y – 2x = 1……… (iii)
For equation (i),
⇒ y = (x + 8)/2
When x = -4, we have y = (-4 + 8)/2 = 2
When x = 0, we have y = (0 + 8)/2 = 4
Thusm we have the following table giving points on the line 2y–
x=8

For equation (ii),

We solve for y:
⇒ y = (x + 14)/5
So, when x = -4
y = ((-4) + 14)/5= 2
And, when x = 1
⇒ y = (1 + 14)/5= 3
Thusm we have the following table giving points on the line 5y – x
= 14

Graph of the equations (i) and (ii) is as below

It’s seen clearly that the two lines intersect at one.

Thus, we can conclude that the system of equations has a unique
solution.
Q-29 Choose the correct answer from the given four options:
1. Graphically, the pair of equations
6x – 3y + 10 = 0
2x – y + 9 = 0
represents two lines which are [NCERT EXEMPLAR]
Sol:- The given equations are,
6x-3y+10 = 0
dividing by 3
⇒ 2x-y+ 10/3= 0… (i)
And 2x-y+9=0…(ii)
Table for 2x-y+ 10/3 = 0,

Table for 2x-y+9=0

Hence, the pair of equations represents two parallel lines.

Q-30 The pair of equations x + 2y + 5 = 0 and –3x – 6y + 1 = 0

have [NCERT EXEMPLAR]
Sol:- The equations are:
x + 2y + 5 = 0
–3x – 6y + 1 = 0
a1 = 1; b1 = 2; c1 = 5
a2 = -3; b2 = -6; c2 = 1
a1/a2 = -1/3
b1/b2 = -2/6 = -1/3
c1/c2 = 5/1 = 5
Here,
a1/a2 = b1/b2≠ c1/c2
Therefore, the pair of equations has no solution.
