Q-1 For what value of k, the pair of linear equations kx-4y=3, 6x-
12y = 9 has an infinite number of solutions? [CBSE 2012, 17]
Sol:- Pair of linear equations
kx-4y-3=0
6x-12y-9=0
Condition for infinite solutions,
a1/a2=b1/b2=c1/c2
k/6=4/12=3/9
K=2
Q-2 Determine the value of y satisfying both the equations x + 6 =
y and 2x - y = 4. [CBSE 2014]
Sol:- Here, x+6=y...(1)
and 2x y=4.......(2)
From eq.(1), substituting the value of y in eq. (2), we obtain
2x-(x+6)=4
2x-x-6=4
⇒ x=10
From eq. (1), we obtain y=10+6-16
Q-3 Find the value of x+y, if 3x-2y= 5 and 3y - 2x = 3.
[CBSE 2014]
Sol:- We have, 3x-2y= 5............(1)
and -2x+3y=3...........(2)
On adding eqs. (1) and (2), we get
x+y=8
Q-4 The cost of 2 kg of apples and 1kg of grapes on a day was
found to be Rs.160. After a month, the cost of 4 kg of apples and 2
kg of grapes is Rs.300. Represent the situation algebraically.
Sol:- Let the cost of 1 kg of apples be ‘Rs. x’.
And, let the cost of 1 kg of grapes be ‘Rs. y’.
According to the question, the algebraic representation is
2x + y = 160
And 4x + 2y = 300
For, 2x + y = 160 or y = 160 − 2x, the solution table is;
Here, the lines represent the given pair of linear equations are
parallel.
Thus, there is no solution to the given pair of linear equations.
Q-14 Find the value of 𝑘 for which the following pair of linear
equations have infinitely many solutions:
2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 7; (𝑘 − 1)𝑥 + (𝑘 + 2)𝑦 = 3𝑘 CBSE 2010, Delhi (30/1/1)
Sol:- Given, the pair of linear equations are
kx + 3y = k - 3
12x + ky = k
We have to determine the value of k for which the pair of linear
equations will have no solution.
We know that,
For a pair of linear equations in two variables be a₁x + b₁y + c₁ = 0
and a₂x + b₂y + c₂ = 0,
≠
If a1/a2=b1/b2 c1/c2, then the graph will be a pair of parallel lines
and so the pair of equations will have no solution.
Here, a₁ = k, b₁ = 3, c₁ = k - 3
a₂ = 12, b₂ = k, c₂ = k
So, a₁/a₂ = k/12
b₁/b₂ = 3/k
c₁/c₂ = (k - 3)/k
For no solution,
≠
a1/a2=b1/b2 c1/c2
So, k/12 = 3/k ≠ (k - 3)/k
Case 1) k/12 = 3/k
k(k) = 3(12)
k(k) = 3(12)
k2 = 36
k = ±6
Case 2) 3/k ≠ (k - 3)/k
3(k)≠ k(k - 3)
3k ≠ k2 - 3k
k2 - 3k - 3k≠ 0
k2 - 6k ≠ 0
k(k - 6)≠ 0
So, k = 6, 0
Therefore, for the value of k = -6, the pair of linear equations have
no solution
Q-15 For which value(s) of k will the pair of equations kx + 3y = k -
3; 12x + ky = k have no solution CBSE 2010, Delhi (30/1/1)
Sol:- Given, the pair of linear equations are
kx + 3y = k - 3
12x + ky = k
We have to determine the value of k for which the pair of linear
equations will have no solution.
We know that,
For a pair of linear equations in two variables be a₁x + b₁y + c₁ = 0
and a₂x + b₂y + c₂ = 0,
≠
If a1/a2=b1/b2 c1/c2, then the graph will be a pair of parallel lines
and so the pair of equations will have no solution.
Here, a₁ = k, b₁ = 3, c₁ = k - 3
a₂ = 12, b₂ = k, c₂ = k
So, a₁/a₂ = k/12
b₁/b₂ = 3/k
c₁/c₂ = (k - 3)/k
For no solution,
≠
a1/a2=b1/b2 c1/c2
So, k/12 = 3/k ≠ (k - 3)/k
Case 1) k/12 = 3/k
k(k) = 3(12)
k2 = 36
k = ±6
Case 2) 3/k ≠ (k - 3)/k
3(k)≠ k(k - 3)
Q-16 Solve the equations x + 2y – 4 = 0 and 2x + 4y – 12 = 0
graphically. [R.D Sharma]
Sol:- Without drawing the graphs, state whether the following pair
of linear equations will represent intersecting lines,
coincident lines of parallel lines:
6𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 10 = 0
2𝑥 − 𝑦 + 9 = 0
Q-17 A number consists of two digits. When the number is
divided by the sum of its digits, the quotient is 7. If 27 is subtracted
from the number, the digits interchange their places. Find the
number. CBSE 2010, Foreign (30/2/1)
Sol:- Step-1: Applying condition 1 according to the question.
The value of xy is (10x +y)
Given (10x+y)/(x+y)=7
⇒ 10x + y = 7 ( x + y )
∴ x = 2y
Step-2: Applying condition 2 according to the question.
10x + y - 27 = 10y + x
Step-3: Substituting 2y for x we get,
20y + y - 27 = 10y + 2y
⇒ 9y = 27
⇒ y=3
Substitute y value in eqn(1)
we get, x = 2× 3
⇒ x=6
Q-18 Solve the following pair of linear equations for 𝑥 and 𝑦:
2(𝑎𝑥 −𝑏𝑦) + (𝑎 + 4𝑏) = 0; 2(𝑏𝑥 + 𝑎𝑦) +(𝑏 − 4𝑎) = 0
CBSE 2010, Foreign (30/2/1)
Sol:- 2(ax−by)+(a+4b)=0×b __(1) [Assuming a and b are non zero
constant]
2(bx+ay)+(b−4a)=0×a__(2)
(1) 2(abx−b²y)+(ab+4b²)=0
(2) 2(abx+a²y)+(ab−4a²)=0
(2) - (1) 2(a²+b²)y−4(a²+b²)=0
⇒ 2y−4=0
⇒ y=2
substituting y=2 in (1)
ab(1+2x)=0
⇒x=2−1
∴ The solution for the simultaneous equation is :
x=−1/2,y=2
Q-19 The sum of two numbers is 8. Determine the numbers if the
sum of their reciprocals is 8/15 . CBSE 2009, Outside Delhi (30/1)
Sol:- Let one number be x. The other number be y.
Given
x+y=8
x=8-y ---------------(1)
1/x+1/y=8/15
By simplyfying this we get
x+y/xy=8/15
From (1) we get.
8/(8−y)y=8/15
8/8y−y²=8/15
1/8y−y²=1/15
8y−y²=15
y2−8y+15=0
(y−3)(y−5)=0
y=3 or 5
We know that x+y=8
When y=5, x=3
Q-20 Five years ago Sagar was twice as old as Tiru 10 years later
Sagar age will be 10 years more than tiru's age find their present
age what was the age of Sagar when tiru was born
Sample Question Paper III, 2008
Sol:- Step 1: Form equations using the informations given in the
question.
Let Sagar’s present age be x years
and Tiru’s present age be y years
According to the question,
Condition I:
Five years ago Sagar was twice as old as Tiru.
⇒ x−5=2(y−5)
⇒ x−5=2y−10
⇒ x−2y=−5.......(i)
Condition II:
Ten years later Sagar’s age will be 10 years more than Tiru’s age.
⇒x+10=(y+10)+10
⇒x+10=y+10+10
⇒x+10=y+20
⇒x−y=10........(ii)
Step 2: Simplify to obtain the required result.
From eq(i)
x=2y−5.......(iii)
Putting the value of x in equation (ii)
⇒ 2y−5−y=10
⇒ 2y−y=10+5
⇒ y=15
Putting the value of y in equation (iii)
⇒ x=2×15−5
⇒ x=25
plotting graph:
2x−3y=12
When:
The solution of the variable is zero; the equation can be solved
easily. Putting x =0 in equation (ii), we get
⇒
4y = 20 y = 5
Similarly putting y = 0 in equation (ii), we get
⇒
3x = 20 x = 20/3, but it is not an integer, so it is not easy to plot
on graph paper.
So, we chose y=2, which gives x =4 as an integer value.
The above can be plotted in a graph as below:
Q-25 Aftab tells his daughter, “Seven years ago, I was seven times
as old as you were then. Also, three years from now, I shall be
three times as old as you will be.” Is not this interesting? Represent
this situation algebraically and graphically.
[R.D SHARMA]
Sol:- Let the present age of Aftab and his daughter be x and y,
respectively.
Hence, seven years ago,
Age of Aftab = x – 7 and Age of his daughter = y – 7
According to the given condition,
⇒
x – 7 = 7 (y – 7) x – 7y = -42……… (i)
Three years from the present age,
⇒
x + 3 = 3 (y + 3) x – 3y = 6………..(ii)
Therefore, equations (i) and (ii) represent the situation
algebraically.
To represent these equations graphically, we need at least two
solutions for each (i) and (ii).
And let’s put them on a table for each.
For equation (i),
