FLIGHT DATA RECORDING

Purpose

The primary purpose of the flight data recorder system is to create an historical
record of airplane flight parameters as required by government regulatory
agencies. The information in the record is used for analysis of flight conditions
in the event of an accident.

Modern flight recorder systems are capable of compiling and recording data on
most of an airplane's components and systems. This capability has created an
expanded purpose for the flight data recorder system. This secondary purpose
is the aircraft condition monitoring system (ACMS). ACMS is used by the airline
to assist in maintenance troubleshooting, creating performance records of
specific systems such as engines, and creating flight profile records for trend
analysis. Specific ACMS capabilities of a flight recorder system are determined
by the airline, and the manufacturer of the flight recorder system components.

System Description

The basic components of the flight data recorder system are the digital flight
data acquisition unit (DFDAU), the digital flight data recorder (DFDR), and the
flight recorder accelerometer. Additional optional components may be added to
enhance ACMS operation.

All data parameters are sent to the DFDAU. Data parameters may be digital,
analog, or discrete signals. The DFDAU conditions and converts the data
parameters. Parameters required by the regulatory agency are sent to the
DFDR for storage. The DFDAU also compiles the data needed for ACMS
functions. These data usually consist of a combination of regulatory agency
required parameters and additional company defined parameters.

The DFDR records regulatory agency required parameters. It has a 25 hour

recording capacity. When storage capacity is full, the DFDR erases the oldest
data, and replaces it with new data. This maintains a record of the latest 25
hours of operation. The recorded data is maintained in a crash survivable
module.

is then transmitted to the SSDFDR, DFDAU floppy disk, and/or the printer for
recording. In addition the DFDAU has a BITE indicator window that can display various
fault codes.
Input Signals

The input signals to the flight recording system consist of mandatory data
required by various regulatory agencies and customer optional data.

Low-speed Data Playback

Low-speed playback of currently received data is performed using the test

connector on the flight deck and ground support equipment. This data is
wrapped-around at the DFDR and made available at the connector through an
internal jumper in the DFDAU.

High-speed Data Retrieval

High speed data retrieval is used for accident or incident investigation or for
troubleshooting. Ground support equipment is hooked directly to the DFDR
copy recorder receptable.

Mounted on the front of the DFDAU is a three and one-half inch floppy disk
drive. Access to the floppy disk is by opening a hinged door on the right side of
the disk drive. Located behind the door is a mechanical eject button to remove
the disk. A drive LED flashes to indicate information is being written onto the
disk. The floppy disk drive is hinged on the left side so that the drive can swing
outward, providing easier access to the floppy disk door.

The DFDAU will automatically format a new disk when it is installed.

The floppy disk can be used to upload an Aircraft Integrated Data System
(AIDS) or Aircraft Condition Monitoring System (ACMS) software programs to
the DFDAU. This is an airline option and is highly customized. The floppy disk
is used for storing AIDS/ACMS reports. The nature and format of the reports
depends upon the software in the DFDAU. The airline chooses the software it
wants to use.

SOLID-STATE FLIGHT DATA RECORDER The recorder receives digital ARINC 573/717 Harvard bi-phase data from the
DFDAU and records the information in memory. The recorder will operate
automatically until power is removed. Should the recorder fault light come on,
Purpose the recorder may not be functioning properly or the input data stream from the
DFDAU is not correct.
The purpose of the solid-state flight data recorder (SSFDR) is to record and
store various flight parameters obtained during the last 25 hours of flight BITE
operations. Data is stored in a non-volatile solid-state memory.
The SSFDR contains internal continuous self-test circuitry. After applying
General power to the SSFDR, the "OFF" light should go out within 5 seconds and should
remain out. Observation of the light for 60 seconds is recommended.
The SSFDR meets all requirements of FAA, TSO-C51a, and EUROCAE EDSS.
It complies with ARINC specification 573 and 717. Data is recorded in a 64 During this time the circuitry checks the SSFDR and the input data from the

is printed lengthwise. Print rates are 415 lines per minute (40 CPL), 370 lines
per minute (53 CPL), 360 lines per minute (64 CPL), and 600 to 650 columns
per minute (80 CPL). Paper used is single, 4.5 inches wide, heat sensitive
copy in roll form with a 90 feet capacity. Paper low indications are shown by the
paper supply indicator and a fault light on the printer panel.

Controls

SLEW - advances paper when pushed.

REPT - repeats a printout of the last printed message.

ALRT/RST - resets in case of an interruption; cancels MSG light.

TEST - initiates five internal tests (ROM, RAM, print head supply voltage,
stepping motor supply voltage, and input bus) and causes a test print. FAULT

FLIGHT DATA RECORDER SYSTEM - POWER SWITCHING

Power-Up

Operation of the flight data recorder system is fully automatic. The system
becomes operational by applying 115 volt ac, 400 Hz, single-phase power from
the left bus to the system and then starting an engine.

Unswitched Power

Unswitched 115 volt ac power is routed from the FLT REC ac circuit breaker to
the DFDAU.

Automatically Switched Power

Switched power for the flight data recorder also originates from the FLT REC
AC circuit breaker.

In normal operation, the flight recorder control panel power control switch
(function switch) is in NORM (open). The close disagree relays are energized
by power to the battery bus and the fuel switch not in CUTOFF. When the left or
the right engine is started, power is automatically routed through the engine
start-to-stop relays. When the airplane becomes airborne, power also is routed
through the closed air/ground relay. That way power remains on the system in
the event of dual engine failure.

Manually Switched Power

Power to the flight data recorder may also be switched manually by placing the
flight recorder control panel power control switch (function switch) to the ON
(latched) or the momentary TEST position.

Test Connector Power

Unswitched power is available at the test connector for ground support

DFDR. The BITE circuit also controls the three fault indicators and displays the
fault codes when the READ switch is pressed.

BITE - EPROM Sumcheck

Periodically both CPUs perform sum checks of their EPROMs. Any failure in
these checks results in a fault message transmitted to the BITE circuit. Either
the DFDAU FAIL or DFDAU CAUTION lights turn on if a sum check error is
detected.

BITE - DFDAU FAIL Indicator

A power supply fault, output data fault, or CPU No. 1 EPROM fault causes the
BITE circuit to turn on the DFDAU FAIL light and set a fault code in the system
status word. At the same time the DFDAU BITE discrete is set to an open. This
causes the flight recorder OFF light to turn on and EICAS displays FLT DAT
ACQ on the STATUS and ECS/MSG pages.

BITE - DFDAU CAUTION Indicator

A digital input fault, analog input fault, or EPROM No. 2 failure sets the
apprropriate fault code in the system status buffer and turns on the DFDAU
CAUTION light.

BITE - Maintenance Flag

If the MAINTENANCE FLAG discrete from the DFDR is open, then the DFDR
has faulted itself. This discrete is applied to the system status buffer, the
corresponding fault code is set, and the DFDR FAIL light is turned on.

maintenance flag is ground.
- Fault Condition - System Fault (and) no DFDAU Fault) - System fault input to
NOR gate 5 is "1". Relay K2 is de-energized, causing the DFDR status signal
to be ground. Relay K1 is de-energized, the OFF light is on, and a ground
discrete is sent to the EICAS computers to initiate the FLT DATA REC
message.
- Fault Condition - SSFDR Fault (and no DFDAU Fault) - SSFDR fault input to
NOR gate 5 is "1". Relay K2 is de-energized, causing the DFDR status signal
to be ground. Relay K1 is de-energized, the OFF light is on, and a ground

Fault Isolation

Any time the READ switch is depressed, the DFDAU FAIL, DFDAU CAUTION
and the DFDR FAIL indicators will illuminate and the 3-digit display will indicate
888. (The 888 indication may be preceeded by an FFF indication for up to 1
second.)

After 4 seconds these indicators will extinguish and the displays will indicate
000 unless a specific failure has occurred.

If failures occur, the respective failure codes will be sequentially displayed in the
display window for 4 seconds each. Up to 16 codes may be displayed.

At the end of the failure codes 000 appears followed by the DFDAU flight
recorder program version. A second pass through the fault codes is followed by
the ACMS program version.

FLIGHT DATA RECORDER SYSTEM - EICAS DISPLAY

Fault Annunciation

Whenever both engines are running and the left 115 volt ac bus is powered,
flight data recorder system faults are annunciated by the status or ECS
maintenance messages FLT DATA REC for a "DFDR status" fault, or FLT DATA
ACQ for a "DFDAU fault".

The messages only appear after a fault condition exists for more than 60
seconds. If they appear in flight, they are latched; if they appear on the ground,
they are not latched.

The message FLT DATA REC is inhibited when a FLT DATA ACQ condition
exists.

Status Page

Presence of a status page can be called up in air or on the ground by pressing

the status page switch on the display selector panel (P9).

Maintenance Page

The maintenance page can be called up only on the ground, by pressing the
environmental control system switch (ECS/MSG) on the EICAS maintenance
panel (P61).

Message Removal

To remove a latched message, the procedure indicated on the graphic must be

followed.

FLIGHT DATA RECORDER SYSTEM TEST failure within the non-mandatory ACMS section of the DFDAU is detected, then
the DFDAU CAUTION light on the front of the DFDAU will come on. There are
no other failure indications.
The purpose of the flight data recorder test is a preflight check of system
performance or a post-maintenance check.
Note: :• If both DFDR and a DFDAU failure are present, then only
Routine the FLT DATA ACQ message will appear on EICAS. A DFDAU
caution light will not generate a EICAS message.
The test is initiated by positioning the flight recorder control switch to TEST
(momentary on position). This position provides 115 volt AC power to the If the DFDAU CAUTION or DFDAU FAIL lights are lit, then fault codes may be
DFDR, causing it to operate. The recorder will operate as long as the switch is available from the DFDAU memory. Pushing the READ switch on the front of
held in TEST, - this causes the OFF light to extinguish. the DFDAU will display these codes.

The DFDAU is operational any time power is applied to the aircraft and its circuit
breaker is closed.

Test Results

If no fault is detected the flight recorder OFF light will remain unlit.

If a fault is detected the following indications will occur.

DFDR Failure:

- Flight recorder OFF light is lit.

- FLT DATA REC message appears on EICAS STATUS and ECS/MSG pages.
- DFDR FAIL light on front of DFDAU comes on.

DFDAU Failure:

- Flight recorder OFF light is lit.

- FLT DATA ACQ message appears on EICAS STATUS and ECS/MSG pages.
- Yellow DFDAU FAIL light on front of DFDAU comes on.
