Instructor: Zalak Shah

Forty randomly selected students were asked the number of pairs of sneakers they owned. Let X
= the number of pairs of sneakers owned. The results are as follows.

X Frequency
1 2
2 5
3 8
4 12
5 12
6 0
7 1

1. Find the mean x̅

2. Find the samples standard deviation
3. Complete the relative frequency column and the cumulative relative frequency column
4. Find the first quartile
5. Find the median
6. Find the third quartile
7. What percentage of students owned at least five pairs
8. Find the 40th percentile
9. Find the 90th percentile
Answer.

x̅ = the total of all data point values divided by the number of observations.

X f Fx ( x−x ) ( x−x )2 f ( x−x )

1 2 2 -2.775 7.700625 15.40125

2 5 10 -1.775 3.150625 15.75313
3 8 24 -0.775 0.600625 4.805
4 12 48 0.225 0.50625 0.6075
5 12 60 1.225 1.500625 18.0075
6 0 0 2.225 4.950625 0
7 1 7 3.225 10.40063 10.40063
40 151 64.975

Sample mean

∑ fx 151
x̅ = = = 3.775 Hence sample mean is 3.775
Σf 40

Question 2.

2
Σf ( x−x )
Sample’s standard deviation =
n−1

With s = standard deviation

X = mean of x

n = number of data points

x = each value of data

2
Σf ( x−x ) 64975
substituting the values it becomes = = = 1.6660
n−1 39

sample’s standard deviation = s = √ 1.6660 = 1.290

Question 3

x F Relative frequency Cumulative relative

frequency
1 2 0.05 0.05
2 5 0.125 0.175
3 8 0.2 0.375
4 12 0.3 0.675
5 12 0.3 0.975
6 0 0 0.975
7 1 0.025 1.000
40

Question 4.

25 1 42
First quartile position = ( n+1 ) X =( n+1 ) × = = 10.5
100 4 4

Where value 10.5 lies between the tenth and eleventh position that had value 3.

3+3
Therefore the 10.5th position value = = 3 hence the first quartile is 3.
2

Question 5.

50 1 42
Median = ( N +1 ) X = ( N + 1 ) × = = 21
100 2 2

21st position value = 4 hence, median = 4

Question 6

75 3× 42 42
Third quartile = (n+1) x = (n+1) x = = 31.5
100 4 4

31.5 is between 31st and 32nd position which value is 5

5+5
Position value = = 5 therefore the third quartile is 5.
2

Question 7

x F Relative frequency Cumulative relative

frequency
1 2 0.05 0.05
2 5 0.125 0.175
3 8 0.2 0.375
4 12 0.3 0.675
5 12 0.3 0.975
6 0 0 0.975
7 1 0.025 1.000
40

When we add the relative frequencies from 5, we get

0.3+0+0.025 = 0.325 of frequency. Which equals 32.5%

Question 8

40th percentile. The 40th percentile is between 3 and 4 but x values are not between 3 and 4
hence the 40th percentile = 4

Question 9

90th percentile = The 80th percentile is between 4 and 5. But x values are not between 4 and 5

From 67.5th percentile to 97.5th percentile all x = 5
