Q-1: Describe the working principle of a Pelton wheel.

Ans: Working principle of a pelton turbine is a simple. When a high speed water jet is injected
through a nozzle, it hits on a bucket of the Pelton wheel. It induces an impulsive force. This force
makes the turbine rotate. The rotating shaft runs a generator and produces the electricity.

Q-2: Why the Pelton wheel is not suitable for low head?
Ans: The Pelton wheel is not suitable for low head because pelton wheels are driven by the impact
forces of water with a large potential energy- converted into kinetic energy by nozzles. So, for
larger potential energy, we need larger head, for better efficiency.

Q-3: Why do the buckets of a Pelton wheel deflect the jet through an angle of 1650 ?
Ans: After striking on the bucket, the jet is deflected through 1650 instead of 1800 to avoid thrust
on the previous bucket of the Wheel.

Q-4: Why the bottom portion of the bucket of a Pelton wheel is cut?
Ans: To avoid the interference of the water jet with upcoming bucket the notch or undercut are
provided at the periphery of the bucket. If the undercut is not provided then while rotating the
wheel the upcoming bucket will get obstruct to the water jet which will result in stopping the
rotation of turbine wheel.

Q-5: Draw the arrangement of a Pelton wheel with schematic diagram.
