CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

School canteens' services including the cooking time, effort, making sure that the
foods are clean, and also the working hours are some of the factors that affect the
foods' prices for them to get paid enough for their hard work but due to overpriced items
in school canteens, it has an impact for the students' allowance. Nutritious meals aren't
affordable since the specific healthy food has organic ingredients that aren't affordable.
So, they now choose to buy unhealthy food that is much more affordable than organic
food.

According to the report by the National Statistical Office of South Korea, there
were about 4.7 million students in South Korea's Universities in 2022. These figures
indicate that there is a huge demand for university food service by students, e-campus
faculty, and staff. However, there are potential challenges for university food service
providers. If the providers in a university food court do not meet the customers' needs
and wants, these customers will go to an off-campus restaurant. There are a lot of fast-
food stores and restaurants near most campuses that can negatively affect on-campus
food service businesses. Therefore, maintaining food quality and keeping costs down
are the biggest considerations in university food service.

An example of this is in Colegio San Agustin. As of now the normal prices for a
meal including drinks in the canteen would reach an estimated amount of P80. For
students who only get a 100 pesos daily allowance, they would only be left with P20,
and that is for lunch alone. This doesn’t include the expenses for school funds being
solicited for educational purposes, such as photocopies, project funds, etc. From this
alone, one can see that having an overpriced canteen does not help students and their
families’ wallets. Other schools that experience the same problem are in LPU-Manila.

In Davao City National High School, there is one problem that many students are
complaining about. Which is the overpriced food in canteens. High prices can contribute
to the financial strain of students, especially those with a limited budget. when canteen
foods are expensive, students may have the option of skipping meals or choosing the
less nutritious ones.
Pursuing this kind of study as a student at Davao City National High School.
Overpriced items often lead to unnecessary financial strain and can result in buyer's
remorse. Furthermore, overpriced items often don't justify their cost in terms of quality or
functionality.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

and their satisfaction with the canteens' services it aims to answer the following items:

cooking and effort?
3. What percentage of your weekly allowance do you typically spend on our school’s
canteens for food?
