Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Transportation problems are one of the traditional functions of Linear Programming Problems.

Transportation models provide a greater impact on the transportation of the commodities from

the manufacturing places. The basic Transportation problem was initially proposed by Hitch

Cock. Transportation problems are being prioritized in both service and manufacturing

industries. It is a network optimization problem which is well known in operation research. This

problem is not only used in transportation problems but also in various fields like scheduling,

personnel assignment, product mix problems, etc. Now a day’s transportation problem has

become a standard application for industrial organizations having several manufacturing units,

warehouses, and distribution centers.

Mathematical modeling is to establish a mathematical model according to actual problems, solve

and calculate the mathematical model, and then solve the actual problems in life according to the

calculated results. The essence of a mathematical model is a dynamic simulation, not a fixed way

of thinking. It is the use of mathematical symbols, mathematical formulas, languages, graphics,

etc., to abstract, summarize, and describe the essence of the problem, to explain some objective

phenomena and development laws in life. Mathematical modeling requires people to flexibly use

the relevant knowledge of mathematics, as well as to carefully observe and analyze the real

problems in life, abstract from the problems, and extract the mathematical model, which is called
mathematical modeling. Since mankind began to tie ropes, mathematics, as the foundation of all

disciplines, has developed significantly along with the progress of human technology. Every

century of mankind has been the century of mathematics, and mathematics has emerged and

developed throughout the history of human civilization. In this century, mathematics has once

again demonstrated its irreplaceable power because of the rapid development of computer

technology, which has ushered in digitalization in all industries. Mathematics represents absolute

rationality, which removes the pretense of things and represents their essence abstractly yet

intuitively. That is why numbers have found deeper and wider application in many fields and

joint disciplines such as biomathematics, financial mathematics, and physical mathematics have

emerged. And mathematical modeling, as the most useful form in the field of science and social

life, has become a necessary way to apply mathematics in the context of big data.

In transportation problems, generally, a single criterion of minimizing the total cost is

considered. But in certain practical situations two or more objectives are relevant. For example,

the objectives may be minimizations of total cost, consumption of certain scarce resources such

as energy, total deterioration of goods during transportation, etc. Clearly, this problem can be

solved using any of the multi objective linear programming techniques; but the computational

efforts needed would be prohibitive in many cases. The computational complexity in these

techniques arises from the fact that each of the methods finds the set of nondominated extreme

points in the solution space where such extreme points are, generally, many (Aneja and

Nair,1979)
Statement of the problem

The main purpose of this research proposal is to determine Transportation Problem encountered

by student in Tarlac State University Lucinda Campus Specially, it sought to answer the

following problems:

1. What is a Transportation Problem encountered by the student of TSU Lucinda Campus?

2. How can we convert a transportation problem into a linear programming problem?

3. How to form a Transportation table? and the basic terminology

Significance of the Study

This research study proposal is highly significant because no study particularly in solving the

transportation problem of students in Tarlac State University Lucinda Campus. This will also

support teachers, parents, students, and the University by increasing their knowledge of

mathematical modelling on transportation problem of Students. Thus, in general, this action

research proposal will contribute to the maximum development of our society and in our present

educational status.

Scope and Delimitation

This study aims to determine transportation problems of Student in Tarlac state University

Lucinda Campus and use North-west Corner method to solve it. Also, the aim of this study is to

determine whether the North-west Corner method can be used in transportation Problem of
Student in Tarlac state University Lucinda Campus. And finally, it aims to determine how the

North-west Corner method works in solving the Transportation problem.

Methodology

Research Design
For this study, the researcher used The North-West corner rule is a technique for calculating an

initial feasible solution for a transportation problem. In this method, we must select basic

variables from the upper left cell, i.e., the North-west corner cell. It is a special type of Linear

Programming Problem (LPP) in which goods are transported from one set of sources to another

set of destinations based on the supply and demand of the origins and destination, respectively,

such that the total cost of transportation is minimized. There are two types of transportation

problems. They are Balanced transportation problems: Both supply and demand are equal.

Unbalanced transportation problem: Supply and demand are not equal. In this case, either a

dummy column or row is added based on the necessity to make it a balanced problem.
Locale of the Study
The study will be conducted in Tarlac City. And the respondent will be the students at Tarlac State

university in Lucinda Campus who are coming from different towns of Tarlac City, to Solve the

transportation Problem of the Student at Tarlac State University Using North-West corner rule.

Research Instrument
The North-West corner rule is a technique for calculating an initial feasible solution for a

transportation problem. In this method, we must select basic variables from the upper left cell,

i.e., the North-west corner cell. It is a special type of Linear Programming Problem (LPP) in

which goods are transported from one set of sources to another set of destinations based on the

supply and demand of the origins and destination, respectively, such that the total cost of

transportation is minimized. There are two types of transportation problems, it is first offered by

George B. Dantzig and published in Koopman’s (1951) monograph 13. The procedure that

Dantzig used to obtain an initial basic feasible solution was later termed North-West Corner Rule

by Charmes and Cooper (1954 to 1955)

Data Gathering
 Origin and Destination Survey

The researcher will propose to use Origin and Destination Surveys to collect data, this data

gathering procedure will collect data regarding trip patterns and can be used with other

information to help the Researcher to understand the needs of an area and develop appropriate

transport solution to a transportation problem.

Ethical Consideration

Confidentially. To avoid data leaks and protect the privacy of data owners and respondents, the

researchers handled any confidential information with great care. To protect sensitive

information, the security guidelines were followed.

Openness. The researchers have agreed to share and provide access to the underlying data, as

well as the processes and results of any future studies, to all interested parties. The researchers

were willing to receive criticism to help one better understand a subject, enabling one to analyze

various points of view, and explain the significance of that subject, and express personal

opinions on the matter. For evaluating and resolving specific issues, reasoning and argument are

the best approaches.

Carefulness. Everything the researchers did has been meticulous, especially when it came to

data and information handling. The information in the data they collect must be extensive.

Furthermore, if the researchers retain the data, it must be kept safe and in a secure place.
