When Mines Turn Into Plants
Analysis Paragraph
The poem’s title “When Mines Turn Into Plants” refers to the fact that dark days will
evolve into sunny days and that the world will be more beautiful when the bad things are
over. It is thought that this title will attract the attention of readers. The first poetic device
is alliteration in the 1st line of the 2nd stanza: “People are there dead as doornails” used
to emphasize the gravity of the situation. Second poetic device is simile in the 2nd line of
the 2nd stanza: “They are inanimate like your long nails” used to reinforce the alliteration
used in the previous line and add a more somber atmosphere. It was intended to
emphasize harshly that people had died or were about to die. Another poetic device is
personification in the 3rd line of the 5th stanza: “Tanks are running towards them” It was
originally used to summarize the situation by combining fact with personification.
Because tanks were literally running towards them. Another poetic device is oxymoron in
the 3rd line of the 10th stanza: “Silent screams were filling everywhere”. Unfortunately,
the word silent screams is very sad, but it is one of the most appropriate words to use in
this situation, because their screams were always silent, they could not make their voices
heard, no one was listening to them. It was used to make the "silent screams" heard. The
last poetic device is hyperbole in the 3rd line on the 11th stanza: “Never expect
breathing” used to show the reality of the situation basically. Because these people never
expect to survive and go back to their homeland. Afraidly not all of them but some of
them survived. There are still people in the world who are judged, persecuted and even
subjected to genocide because of their race. The author tried to explain this situation
sincerely and wanted to say that "when the mines turn into plants" we will also see good
days.
