3 Review Game

1. Determine whether each scenario is binomial, geometric, or neither. If neither,


explain why.
a. Mark forgot to study for his statistics quiz, so he decides to guess on each
question. There are 20 questions total with a mix of multiple choice,
true/false, and fill in the blank. Count the number of questions that Mark
gets correct.
b. Ms. Wentzel has an envelope with the names of everyone in the class. She
picks seven names from the envelope and counts how many of them are
juniors.
c. Ms. Wentzel has a large bin of markers. Pick a marker, see if it works, and
then replace it. Count how many markers you need to try until you find one
that works.
d. At Claire’s hair salon, every client has a 7% chance of cancelling their
appointment. Count how many appointments Claire has until two clients
cancel in a row.

2. Determine whether each scenario is binomial, geometric, or neither. If neither,


explain why.
a. A spinner has twelve sections. Caitlyn spins the spinner until she lands on a
section that she has already landed on. Count the number of spins it takes.
b. At a local thrift shop, every book has a 19% chance of being non-fiction.
Randomly select twenty books and count how many are nonfiction.
c. During a bingo game, the announcer draws 20 different numbers from 1-75.
Count how many of these numbers match a space on your bingo card.
d. Dan is showing off a magic trick where the person picks a card from the deck,
looks at it, and returns it. Count the number of times Dan must do this trick
until every possible card has been picked.
3. About 72% of all desks in the school are wobbly.
a. What is the probability that out of the seven desks you sit in during the day,
at least two are wobbly?
b. What is the probability that you find a wobbly desk within the first three?
c. What is the probability that out of a classroom of 30 desks, 20 of them are
wobbly?
d. You decide to test desks until you find a wobbly one. How many desks do you
expect that this will take?

4. Suppose that 41% of all seniors at OJR have AM or PM privilege. You randomly
select 11 seniors and count how many have privilege.
a. Find the probability that three of them have privilege, by hand showing all
work.
b. Find and interpret the mean of the random variable.
c. Find and interpret the standard deviation of the random variable.

5. A spinner has seven equal sections of different colors. Spin until it lands on
aqua. Let X represent the number of spins required.
a. Find P(X= 10), by hand showing all work.
b. Find and interpret μX.
c. Find and interpret σX.
6. For each math homework assignment, there is a 13% that Rob will complete it.
A chapter has sixteen assignments. Find the probability of each event.
a. Rob completes four of the assignments for the chapter.
b. There are at least ten homework assignments before Rob completes one.
c. The seventh assignment is the first one Rob completes.
d. Rob completes less than six of the assignments.

7. In 2019, 58% of all students at Penn State’s University Park campus were PA
residents. Find each probability.
a. More than half of the students in a freshman dorm of 120 are PA residents.
b. When you ask randomly selected students if they are PA residents, you find
one within four students.
c. In a freshman writing seminar of 18 students, only five are not PA residents.
d. A group of 25 random students has between 16 and 22 who are PA residents.

8. According to the CDC, about 48.6% of Americans received the flu shot in 2016-
17. A national poll selects a random sample of 500 Americans to ask about their
medical history. Find the probability of each scenario.
a. It takes more than five people to find one who got the vaccine?
b. No more than 150 of the people polled were vaccinated.
c. The tenth person called in the first who did not get the vaccine.
d. The number of people vaccinated is the same as the mean.
