Butler University Live Mascot Program

Butler University, located in Indianapolis, Indiana, has a long-standing tradition of incorporating

live mascots into its campus culture since the introduction of Butler Blue I in 2000. The
university's live mascot program adds elements of spirit and pride to campus events, athletic
competitions, and community engagements. At the forefront of this tradition is Butler Blue IV,
the beloved English Bulldog who has captured the hearts of students, alumni, and fans alike.

The roots of Butler University's live mascot program can be traced back to 1919 when the
university adopted the bulldog as its official mascot. Inspiration for the bulldog moniker came
from a fraternity bulldog wandering into the Butler Collegian offices before a must-win rivalry
game against Franklin College. Since then, bulldogs have symbolized strength, determination,
and tenacity for the university community. Over the years, four bulldogs have served as live
mascots, each leaving behind a legacy of loyalty and school spirit.

Butler Blue IV, affectionately known as "Blue”, is the current reigning bulldog live mascot of
Butler University. Blue made his first university appearance on January 24, 2020, during a Butler
basketball game, and has been beloved ever since. Born on August 30, 2019, Blue succeeded his
predecessor, Butler Blue III, also known as Trip, in continuing the tradition of representing
Butler's values and spirit. Blue's distinctive eyebrow mark and signature Butler-themed attire
make him instantly recognizable both on and off campus.

As Butler's official live mascot, Blue plays a pivotal role in fostering school pride and
community engagement. He attends various campus events, including athletic games, alumni
gatherings, and student activities, where he serves as a beloved ambassador for the university.
Beyond campus borders, Blue extends his outreach to the wider Indianapolis community and
beyond. He participates in charitable events, visits local schools and hospitals, and engages with
fans through his various social media platforms. Blue's friendly demeanor and playful antics
make him a cherished figure not only among Butler Bulldogs but also among the broader
Indianapolis and online community.

Butler University's live mascot program, epitomized by the iconic Butler Blue IV, continues to be
a source of pride and inspiration for the university community. Through his presence, Blue
embodies the spirit of Butler, uniting Butler fans, students, and alumni across generations,
fostering a sense of belonging that extends far beyond the confines of campus. As Butler's
faithful ambassador, Blue remains a symbol of strength, resilience, and unwavering Bulldog
pride.
