answer to each of the questions from 20 to 24.
Some people love cities, and other people hate them. But more people than ever are choosing to live in one.
Cities will be bigger than ever. A megacity is a city with a population of over 10 million people.
Megacities around the world face the same problems: traffic and housing. São Paulo, Brazil, is a good
example. "There are 30 million daily trips in São Paulo," says Jorge Wilheim, a city official. "One-third is public
transport, one-third is private cars, and one-third is walking. Sixty to seventy percent should be on public
transportation." The city is building a new freeway and adding to the subway system, but it's slow work. Every
day, millions of people are sitting in traffic jams.
Housing is also a serious problem for the 18 million people in São Paulo. Most of the jobs are downtown,
and houses and apartments are very expensive there. So workers live in cheaper places far away from their jobs
and commute for many hours. And many new residents can't find any housing for their families, so they live in
slums. These are places where people find empty land and build small huts. Ilson da Silva is one man who has
done this. When he came to the city six years ago, he didn't have a job. He built a one-room hut next to a garbage
dump. Now he works as a janitor, and his house has three rooms and a flower garden. The government has
brought in running water and electricity, and the slum is becoming a real neighborhood. For Ilson, and for
millions of other people, megacities mean hope for a better future.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 25 to 31.
Every day we face challenges at school, work or in our personal lives, and we need to develop the skills to
deal with them. Computer skills, for example, are vital for most activities we carry out in our daily lives as well
as helping you with studying. When we are young, we are able to learn basic social skills but there are other
important skills that can be more challenging to acquire. Surprisingly, video games can often help us to master
these.
For example, there are many video games which can help us to develop problem-solving skills. Some games
help develop patience and perseverance skills by continuing to increase the level of difficulty. They constantly
place obstacles in your path until you reach the solution. As a result of playing these games, players can develop
confidence, as being able to overcome the obstacles gives you a real sense of achievement. Patience,
perseverance and overcoming difficulties are three essential skills in everyday life. As humans we often learn
through mistakes, however some mistakes would be best avoided. Video games can expose you to making
decisions in the virtual world by allowing you to choose your characters' actions and then showing you the
results of these actions. This may help you make more informed choices in the real world.

Mã đề 401 Page 2/4

However beneficial these games may be, there are things to remember. Too much screen time can isolate you
from the real world and if you play multi-player games online, then you need to be sure who you are playing
with. It's also vital to make sure that you are not running up a huge bill in games that you pay for online.
Links between schools and video games developers have resulted in more games focused on developing life
skills. The not-for-profit organisation, Makerspace, has developed an education programme based around games
in conjunction with Minecraft. The programme claims that 30 minutes of video play in the classroom can
improve planning skills, memory and motor skills. As well as developing life skills, having excellent computer
skills could also help you with a future career. So, play on and learn two valuable lessons at the same time.
Question 25. The word They in paragraph 2 refers to ______ .
A. players B. obstacles C. skills D. games
Question 26. The word obstacles in paragraph 2 can be best replaced by ______ .
A. conveniences B. benefits C. hindrances D. failures

A. Makerspace has encouraged schools to increase the hours of students playing games.
B. Making errors in a game may help players understand their consequences.
C. Spending excessive time on playing video games can lead to serious ailments.
D. Overcoming obstacles in a game helps players recognise their weaknesses.

Read the following and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions from 14 to 20.
Everybody feels irritated by their siblings from time to time. Maybe your younger brother shows off and
behaves in an immature way when you invite your friends to your house. Or perhaps your hardworking older
sister gets a lot of praise from your parents, making you feel like you are not trying hard enough. At times, your
brother or sister can feel like your worst enemy. But your relationship can improve greatly with a bit of effort
and understanding.
Sibling relationships can be especially difficult for teenagers, who are experiencing many changes to their
preferences and personality. For example, you may now find some of the activities that you used to enjoy doing
with your younger brother childish or a waste of time. At times, the age difference can feel bigger than it really
is, and this can have a negative effect on your relationship. One way to solve this problem is to make sure you
continue to include your brother or sister in your day-to-day life. This can take some time, so it is important to be
patient and enthusiastic.
Of course, it is perfectly normal for brothers and sisters to fall out with one another over small things. But
you should not try to let incidents like these have too big an effect on your relationship. It is important to learn to
forgive your siblings for this kind of behaviour, just as you would forgive your close friends. In situations like
these, it is really important to let your sibling know how you feel. Rather than insulting your sister when she
takes your things, tell her that it makes you feel angry, and that you would feel much happier if she asked you
first. It‟s also crucial that you are sensitive to the feelings of your siblings too.
Finally, it is important to learn how to compromise. It is understandable that you may not want to lend your
favourite jumper to your unreliable sister, but maybe you could offer her a less valuable alternative item of
clothing. Or if your brother likes to spend all his free time watching football and you find it boring, you could
suggest a different sport that you follow regularly together. And if you make the effort to make your sibling
happy, he or she will do the same for you.

Is intimate friendship a relationship that is dying out in modern society? In our busy lives, we have many
acquaintances and friends - the people we work with, our neighbours, the people we chat to at the local shop and
so on. But how many really close friendships can we count? The truth for most of us is probably not many. Some
psychologists say that while we still value strong family bonds, in recent times, friendships have lost the strength
and importance that they had in the past.
According to a study published recently in the USA, friendships in America have been declining in quality
and quantity since at least 1985. It claims that 25% of Americans don‟t have anyone they could call a close
friend. Yet, on the surface, Americans seem extremely friendly people. If you have ever visited the USA, you
will be familiar with the warmth and hospitality that they show to complete strangers. Everyone can be treated
as a „buddy‟, even if they are just a casual acquaintance.
But in other cultures, acquaintances and friendships have different qualities. In France, for example, when
you are trying to get to know a person, they may seem rather unfriendly and the length of time it takes to form a
strong friendship seems greater than in other countries. This is because for the French there is still a clear
distinction between a casual acquaintance and a true friend. Although France is changing and perhaps becoming
more like America, there is no doubt that French people are still more private in their friendships and that they
reserve real intimacy for their closest friends. This intimacy can be found in many other non-western cultures
too, where great importance is attached to the quality of friendships. It is something that many of us in the West
have forgotten and need to rediscover.
