Stylus Writings Reading Response

For this assignment the two Stylus Readings that I chose to read and write about were

“From Composer to Concerto: A Genre Analysis of Sheet Music and Its Editors” and “Medical

Influencers: A Rhetorical Analysis of TikTok’s Genre Features”.

For the first Stylus Writing that I chose, I feel that the author’s main idea is the value and

the importance that is shown on sheet music and different editions of it, on top of, diving deeper

into the genre that surrounds this topic. I believe that the author does a great job of conveying

their message regarding the main idea. While reading this piece of writing I was persuaded to

think exactly what the author was thinking and enjoyed reading it. The research method the

author uses is to take three subjects and take their different editions of Mozart’s Concerto in G.

The author collected their data by taking the three case studies and analyzing the three different

editions that were chosen. I agree with the author’s perspective because I think that the research

that the author did supported exactly what the main idea was. One of the three case studies said

that, “the only one available at the music store and it was cheap”(75) this shows that this person

chose this edition because of its price and its value was cheap. I can not think of any real-world

issues or events that pertain to this piece of writing.

For the second Stylus Writing that I chose, I feel that the author’s main idea is to talk

about the bridge of information between non-experts and experts across different social media

platforms, specifically TikTok. I think that the author conveys their message very well and

smoothly. I feel that the paragraphs and the paragraph structure fit well. The research method

that the author uses is to go into TikTok and search up different creators that are doctors and see

how they are communicating with other TikTok users who are nonmedical doctors. The author

collects the data by looking through three different TikTok pages where each of the people was a

certified doctor. Then the author proceeded to go through their page and see if their pages were

talking to people who were non-experts. The author found that a lot of the videos duets and

replies to comments on previous posts. My opinion of the author’s perspective was that I agree

with what the author has to say. I have TikTok and as an avid TikTok user I see things that

pertain to doctors all the time popping up on my for you page sometimes I have a question and I

will see on their page that they have already answered my question. “Medical influencers

develop and formulate their niche style to communicate their knowledge about their specialties”

(70). This is an in-text example of what the author is portraying and the example that I gave

about myself on TikTok. I think it is cool that certified doctors can communicate with

non-experts on a social media platform in such a creative way.
