Geometry Skills Learned One of the skills I was taught in geometry class was the rigid transformation and how to apply it/when it needed to be applied. During class though, I struggled to figure out when to and when not to use it. This skill was incredibly useful when trying to find the original orientation of the base shape then shifting it how many ever degrees right or left. The definition of rigid transformation is to “change a shape's position but keep its size and shape.” It also helps in finding out if a shape on the plane is defined by reflection. Congruent triangles is definitely one of the most confusing topics we have covered as well. ; More specifically, the way it was explained to me at least, the acronyms ASA, SSA, SSS, SAS, RHS were super mind boggling. I say this because the mini congruency lines could easily confuse you due to multiple triangles being connected together (or a rectangle being cut into even shapes diagonally). Congruent triangles are defined as three corresponding sides that are equal and that all the three corresponding angles are equal in measure. These triangles can also be slid, rotated, flipped, turned to look identical. Another skill I learned in Mr.Maliks math class is the properties of dilation. The properties of dilation is that objects that are similar have the exact same angles on each side. Whether or not the figure is 3 times smaller than the original object or one million times larger than the original figure, the corresponding angles would be the same. This article byjus.com also states “Each angle of the figure is the same. Midpoints of the sides of the figure remain the same as the midpoint of the dilated shape. Parallel and perpendicular lines in the figure remain the same as the parallel and perpendicular lines of the dilated figure. The images remain the same.” Even though it was a hard topic to learn, it was fun. Constructions in math might just be the hardest thing to do due to the fact that it has to be hand drawn. Hand-Drawing shapes is incredibly difficult because of how precise they have to be and I have terrible hand-eye coordination making it harder. Learning the basic constructions (angle and perpendicular bisectors) make it simpler since it looks more like a coordinate plane so I am able to plot it easier. The definition of constructions in this case is “accurate drawings of shapes, angles and lines in geometry. To do this we need to use a pencil, a ruler (a straight-edge) and compasses.” However, it still caused me to struggle. The easiest thing/things i've learned in this class were intersecting lines creating different types of angles and converting equivalent fractions with x as a numerator or denominator. Converting decimals was so easy because I learned how to do them back in the seventh grade; intersecting lines and congruency go hand in hand which makes both of those lessons easier. All in all, these various geometry topics prepare me for the future and i’m excited to learn more about it.
