A little bit of his Biography


Lewis Latimer was a African-American inventor and patent-expert that taught himself mechanical
drawing; eventually becoming a chief draftsman, patent expert, and inventor. Born on September 4th,
1848 in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Latimer's design produced a carbon filament that was more durable and
longer lasting than earlier filaments. As a result, incandescent light bulbs became affordable to more
consumers.
Latimer also fought in the civil war in the union navy. Working with Thomas (Alva) Edison on the
effectiveness of a lightbulb and many other things of that nature. Being one of the first men to work in the
air conditioning field, Latimer developed and received a patent for the forerunner of the air conditioner in
1886 known as an “Apparatus for cooling and disinfecting.”

Some of his Biography


George Washington Carver was an agricultural scientist also being an inventor creating hundreds of items
using only peanuts, working on things like sweet potatoes and soybeans; although not peanut butter as we
are led to believe. Carver, being born into slavery before it was abolished, left home early to pursuit
education. He then proceeded to earn his master degree in Iowa University in agricultural science. After
this, he decided to go teach and research in Tuskegee University for many years. Dying in 1943, his
childhood home became the first black national monument
