1. There is still a place in the modern workplace for classical theories. Consider the
classical and contemporary theories, in terms of measurement of job performance.
1.1 Tabulate classical and contemporary theories as given by Smit et al. (6)
1.2 Do additional research on the following three theories and write a paragraph on
each theory about its approach, appropriateness in the modern workplace, and an
example of the relevance of this approach.

Example: Scientific Management Theory
This approach to management was developed by Frederick W Taylor. (1) He was
interested in improving the productivity of workers. McDonald's (1) shows the evidence
of applying the principles of scientific management (1). They institute bonus systems to
encourage the employees to perform well to meet goals. (2) Also, they train the workers
scientifically rather than passively leaving them to train themselves. It aims to bring
everyone’s production efficiency into full play to accomplish maximum profit. Moreover,
they cooperate with the workers to ensure that scientifically developed methods are

different environments have on an organisation.
Read the information below and consult the relevant text in the prescribed material, then
answer the question that follows.
Content theories on motivation investigate what needs people want to satisfy and
attempt to identify the factors that influence individual behaviour. In contrast to the
content theories that focus on individual needs, process theories attempt to find out
how motivation actually occurs. One such process theory on motivation is the
reinforcement theory.
In essay format, explain the reinforcement theory of motivation and the techniques
managers can use to schedule such reinforcement: continuous reinforcement, fixed
interview schedule, variable interval, fixed ratio, variable ratio. Refer to the examples
provided in the prescribed text but include your own examples from industry such as
restaurants, hotels, or public institutions. (Remember to reference websites correctly if
additional research is done.)
