5.0 Tasks to be carried out

The PFD diagram of a plant of the production of ethylene from ethanol is shown in Appendix
1. The temperature of the streams (oC) are shown in the box. The stream condition is listed
in Table 1.

From the PFD:

1. Identify the streams those require heating and cooling and calculate the heat content

(Q) for each stream identified in Joule.

Sample Calculation:
𝑄 = 𝑚𝐶𝑝∆𝑇

𝑘𝐽
𝑄1 = (100 𝑚𝑜𝑙) (7.6 ) (45℃ − 78℃)
𝑚𝑜𝑙℃

𝑄1 = −25080 × 103 𝐽

2. Design the heat integration for the heat exchanger network using the MUMNE
algorithm:
• Choose a minimum approach temperature of 10 oC and construct a
Temperature Interval Diagram.

Sample Calculation:

𝑄 = 𝑚𝐶𝑝∆𝑇

𝑘𝐽
𝑄𝐴 = (1060 )(545℃ − 510℃)

𝑄𝐴 = 37100 × 103 𝐽

1. Construct the cascade diagram and determine the pinch temperature.

3. Design the revision PFD based on the new heat exchanger network.

4. Calculate the cost of heat exchanger network without and with heat integration. Use bare
module cost to determine the cost of equipment (HE). Use the following assumptions:

Assumption:
• Only the effect of Q will be considered in this case.

• The other variables effect will be considered as the same for all HE: ✓ Shell and tube heat
exchanger with u-tube head type
✓ U = 10 kJ/hr m2 K
✓ ΔTLMTD = ΔT.

✓ f = 1. (10 marks)
