Basic Design Principles

ARCHITECTURAL INTERIORS

Andr'e Bornea Ciara De Pano Marc Gilbas

DESIGN PRINCIPLES:

Balance

Balance in architecture is the arrangement of

elements such that they are not overweighed in
one area. This can be accomplished through the
application of symmetry. When walls or other
elements are present on both sides of an axis, this
can create balance.
DESIGN PRINCIPLES:

Rhythm
In architecture, rhythm is a
design strategy that describes
the recurrence of patterns, forms,
elements, and colors. It enhances
the building design's feeling of
fluidity and movement. In
addition to meeting functional
requirements, architectural
rhythm contributes to the
creation of visually beautiful and
harmonious designs.
DESIGN PRINCIPLES:

Emphasis
Emphasis refers to the intentional highlighting of
certain elements within a space to draw attention
and create visual interest. It can be achieved
through the use of focal points such as statement
furniture pieces, artwork, or architectural details.
Emphasis adds depth and dimension to a space,
guiding the eye towards important features and
establishing a focal point for the overall composition
of a room.
DESIGN PRINCIPLES:

Scale
Scale refers to the relative size of an
element in a design when compared to
another element. It is responsible for
creating a visual hierarchy among
elements of your creation. It tells
viewers what things to look at, what
order to look at them, and what's the
most important element to focus on.
DESIGN PRINCIPLES:

Proportion
Proportion is the relationship of two or
more elements in a design and how
they compare with one another.
Proportion is said to be harmonious
when a correct relationship exists
between the elements with respect to
size or quantity
DESIGN PRINCIPLES:

Contrast
Contrast in architecture creates a sense
of visual interest and engagement.
Without contrast, buildings can feel
flat, monotonous, and uninteresting. By
creating contrast, architects can
manipulate the viewer's perception of
space, create visual flow, and add
drama to an otherwise dull design.
DESIGN PRINCIPLES:

Harmony
Harmony refers to the cohesive
blending of various elements
within a space, resulting in a
sense of balance, unity, and visual
appeal. This concept is achieved
through the careful selection of
furnitures and placement of
materials, colors, textures, and
forms that complement and
enhance each other.
