1. Read the following passage about the Statue of Liberty in New York. Decide if the statements are true (T)

The Statue of Liberty is situated in New York Harbour. It was a gift to the United States from the people of France.
The statue's 300 copper pieces were transported to America on a ship. In 1886, the statue was the tallest iron
structure ever built. From the ground to the top, it measures 93 metres.
Lady Liberty holds a torch in one hand and a tablet in the other. On the tablet is the date of America’s first
Independence Day, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue is a symbol of freedom.
Approximately four million people visit the statue each year. The statue will be celebrating its 130th birthday in
October 2016.

Watching television is an interesting and fun activity. The first television broadcast in Australia was in 1956. Back
then, the pictures on a TV were black and white only. Television has changed a lot since then.
There are several channels and they show different TV programmes. In Western Australia, the main channels are
ABC, Seven, Nine, Ten, and SBS. TV guides tell us what programmes are showing on which channel, and at what
time on a day.
Many programmes on television are episodes. They are part of a series. These episodes usually last for either 30
minutes or a full hour. At the weekend there are interesting films. You can watch them instead of going to the cinema.

Mi: Kids' Funs programme. It's on channel 7. Ah, no… channel 17. It's often at 6 in the
evening. There are funny games for kids to play. It’s fun and relaxing to watch.
Mrs Mai: Sure. And you, Tom?
Tom: I like Discovery channel. The most exciting part is the Shark Week. It has a programme
about a very big shark - The Megalodon. It’s like a monster. It's totally thrilling.
Mrs Mai: Yes, sounds exciting!
Mi: What do you like, Mrs Mai?

next week.
