BCD to 7-Segment Decoder

I. Introductory Information

This decoder’s operation is quite straightforward. Basically, the IC interprets the BCD code
across its input pins and outputs a code to light up the required segments in a seven-segment
LED display.

There are many 7-segment decoder/display driver ICs available today. This experiment uses the
74LS47 IC which is electrically identical to the 74LS247. The main difference is that the LS247
displays the digits ‘6’ and ‘9’ with ‘tails’.

The LS47 is equipped with a 4-bit BCD input, ripple blanking input (RBI), blanking input/ripple-blanking
output (BI/RBO), and a lamp test input. The RBI is used for trailing edge zero-blanking control. The
BI/RBO is used to control lamp intensity by varying the frequency and the duty cycle of the input signal or
to inhibit the outputs.

The best way to see how this IC functions is to connect it to a seven-segment LED display. The 7-
segment display required for this IC is a common-anode type. The schematic representation and pin
assignments are shown.

The LED segment is lit by applying a low level logic signal across the required input pin. A resistor is
needed to connect the display to a 5-Volt source to limit the current and voltage to the LED segment.
II. Materials : 74LS47, common anode seven-segment LED display, seven pieces of 470 Ohms (0.25W,
5% tol.)

Connect the circuit shown. Initially, turn off the power to the trainer and double check your work to ensure
that everything is in order before proceeding with the experiment.

III. Procedure

1. Switch the clock frequency range to low position and adjust the clock frequency to minimum position (full
counterclockwise). Switch off data switches D1 to D4.
2. Switch on the power supply.
3. What does the 7-segment LED display show? It shows a certain number and symbol which regards of
the combination of the inputs.

4. Fill up the table below to verify the display on the 7 segments.

5. Compare the results with the truth table given earlier. Are they the same? Results have shown that the
given previous table is identical to the truth table that has being verified.

6. What logic level is required at the inputs of the 7-segment LED display to light a particular segment? Inputs
must be at LOW state for a particular segment to light up.

7. Write a brief description of the circuit’s operation.


The BCD Seven Segment Decoder displays the output onto the 7-segment display regarding on its
input logic combination. It contains 4 logic inputs that classified as A, B, C, D and output lines that
sums up to 7 that classified as a, b, c ,d, e, f, and g.

IV. Conclusion

The BCD 7-segment decoder in summary simply gives out an output regarding on the segment that is being
switched on to the display. Numbers and symbols occur in regards of the logic combinations. Through the
results, it has shown that the data required to be filled was proportional on its previous mentioned table and
the BCD 7-segment decoder has given the accurate outputs from the combination of the inputs. The
common Anode in the 7-segment display is always required to connect its common to the VCC while the
rest of the inputs are on ground to light up a particular segment.
