NARRATIVE REPORT ON CATCH UP FRIDAY

S.Y. 2023-2024
GRADE I

The Department of Education (DepEd) remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering

quality, relevant, inclusive, and responsive basic education. This commitment is further strengthened
by the present administration’s Eight Point Socioeconomic Agenda and the MATATAG Education
Agenda to produce competent, job – ready, active, and responsible citizens, equipped with essential
competencies and skills for lifelong learning.

Prior to MATATAG Agenda and accelerate the achievement of Education targets as

stipulated in DepEd Order (DO) No. 013, s. 2023 titled Adoption of the National Learning Recovery
Program (NLRP), there is a need to intensify Values, Health, and Peace Education. In light of these
consideration, DepEd implemented Catch – Up Fridays that begins on January 12, 2024 up to January
26, 2024 across elementary and secondary schools and community learning centers (CLCs)
nationwide. All Fridays of January 2024 shall be dedicated to the “Drop Everything and Read”
(DEAR) activity and orientation for field officials.
With this, Catch–Up Fridays was adapted by all the schools including Padolina Elementary
School. We, teachers provide a revised class program which indicates that Friday is “CATCH – UP
FRIDAYS” until January 26, 2024. This program served as a learning mechanism intended to
strengthen the foundational, social, and other relevant skills necessary to actualize the intent if the
basic Education Curriculum.
On January 12, 2024 Padolina Elementary School provided an orientation to the parent as
well as the learners. We explained the benefits and importance of “Catch – Up Fridays”. We also
asked for the help of the parents to continue teaching their children on how to read at home.
There are challenges that I encountered in implementing Catch Up Friday. Short period of
time when it comes to preparation since the memorandum was released two days before the
implementation of first Friday but since one of the attitudes of a teacher is being flexible, I prepared
all the needed materials on time. Another problem that I faced is the lack of interventional materials.
Since there is a short preparation on the first week, I only prepared minimal materials to the pupils
from frustrated readers up to independent readers but it was effectively integrated to them on
Fridays.
Based on the memorandum that was given to us, we focused on reading, values education,
health education, peace education, and lastly homeroom guidance. In morning class, I provided
different reading materials in different learning areas. I prepared reading materials for the frustrated
reader such as flash cards and simple stories with two to five questions.
Different strategies were applied on the newly implemented program. I used silent reading,
reading – aloud, flash cards, spelling bee and video presentation with corresponding questions
regarding elements of short story. In Health Program, I let them had an exercise as well as one session
and lesson proper in showing the use of different health kit and first aid kit.
This program is a great help to the pupils to reinforce learning and individual progress. It
provided the pupils with additional opportunities to reinforce key concepts, revisit challenging topics,
and engaged in interactive learning experiences. With this, pupils will have different intervention and
reading enhancement through developmentally appropriate reading materials provided. All in all, the
goal of this program is to enhanced the skills of learners in different areas.
