Trends are driven by these three fundamental elements:

Basic Needs Trends arise from things that people need to survive.
Examples are food and shelter, health and wellness, safety, self-improvement,
and social status. In 2019, milk tea became a food trend in the Philippines
with an annual growth rate in the consumption of about 17%.

Drivers of change Change is inevitable with a trend. At present, it is

common to use the terms of Shifts and Triggers.
Shifts refer to the large- g
periods of time. Examples are climate change, recession, and most
advances in technology. These macro changes have a big impact on the
nature and direction of a trend.
Triggers are immediate changes that start a trend. Examples of these
are political events, a serious crisis such as a pandemic, and disruptive
events in nature and the environment.

Innovations An innovation is not a trend. However, innovations fuel the

emergence of trends. For example, the digital innovations in retailing sparked

e-commerce sites.

The interaction among these three elements often drives the emergence of a
trend.

Exercises: Think of a particular trend. Discuss how the three fundamental

elements mentioned above gave rise to that trend.
