Welcome
Me?
I’m the face behind The Dressmakers’ Guild brand. Nicola Ridd-
Davies, a qualified, industry professional master pattern cutter with a
sometimes unhealthy obsession for clothes and a conscience about
their provenance.
…and you?
Maybe you’re a time-rich beginner or need to carve out a little me
time and acquaint yourself with the therapeutic, ethical and fabulously
rewarding practice of home dressmaking but struggling to get your
head around pattern instructions which seem to be written in some
mystical language, know to only a few and understood by even fewer.
Maybe you’re an avid dressmaker but frustrated with the lack of
inclusive sizing and fit.
Maybe, like me, you just love free stuff.
The Dressmakers’ Guild patterns aim to accommodate as many shapes
and sizes as possible across the whole gender spectrum and the
video tutorials offer easy to understand (albeit in my Welsh accent),
contextual learning and are presented with the beginner in mind. That
said, the courses are suitable for any level.
Each new product release will give careful consideration to your
comments and feedback, so the brand will develop as a response to
what you want, rather than what I want to give you.
I’d like to invite you to be a part of this journey by joining The
Dressmakers’ Guild community on facebook and instagram, or
signing up to the newsletter.
Either way, we’d love to hear from you.
Nicola

printing options
An important part of the process is printing and preparing your pattern.
We realise that people like to work in different ways, we therefore offer
two options to get your pattern onto paper:

A Guide to Pattern
Sheet Assembly
Step 1
The sheets are labelled in rows A1, B1,
C1, D1 etc. and columns A1, A2, A3,
A4 etc.
Step 2
Place the centre of the cross directly on top the cross
on the next sheet. Budget copy paper of 75gsm or less
works best as it’s more translucent, making the cross
underneath more visible. If your paper is completely
opaque, use a pin to pierce the centre of the top and
bottom cross to hold them in place.
Step 3
Working in rows (or columns), stick your sheets
together, being careful to match the centre of the
crosses. When done correctly, the pattern lines will
automatically align. I use a glue stick or removable
tape for this as both allow for adjusting or re-
positioning.
Step 4
Stick the rows to the columns (or columns to
the rows) in the same way. All overlaps will
be 2cm so double check this before you cut
out the pattern in your chosen size.
