Section properties for the shaft are as follows:
OD = 1.200 in.
ID = 0.000 in.
c = 1.200 in. / 2
= 0.6000 in.
Area = (1.200 in.)2 / 4
= 1.131 in.2
J = (1.200 in.)4 / 32
= 0.2036 in.4
I = (1.200 in.)4 / 64
= 0.1018 in.4
S = 0.1018 in.4 / 0.6000 in.
= 0.1696 in.3
Q = (1.200 in.)3 / 12
= 0.1440 in.3

For stress element A (on the top of the shaft):

The force Pz = -150.0 lb creates the following stresses:

a) Although Pz creates a moment about the y axis, it produces zero flexural

stress on stress element A because z = 0 at this location. In other words, element
A is on the neutral axis for moments about the y axis.

b) A shear stress due to a torsional moment about the x axis. The magnitude
of the shear stress is given by:
|T| = |T|c / J
= (150.0 lb)(18.0 in.)(0.6000 in.) / 0.2036 in.4
= 7,957.7 psi

Sign convention: Generally, the proper shear stress direction is determined by

inspection. The direction of the stress is shown on the stress element.

c) A transverse shear stress due to the 150.0 lb shear force. The magnitude of
the shear stress is given by:

|V| = |Vz|Q / I t
= (150.0 lb)(0.1440 in.3) / [(0.1018 in.4) (1.200 in.)]
= 176.8 psi

Sign convention: Generally, the proper shear stress direction is determined by

inspection. The direction of the stress is shown on the stress element.

Summary for stress element A (on the top of the shaft): The normal stresses for
the combined loading can be determined by superimposing the individual cases.
For stress element A (on the top of the shaft), the total normal stress acting on the
element is a stress of 0.0 psi. The shear stresses for the combined loading act in
the positive z direction on the positive x face of the element. The magnitude of
the shear stress is 7,780.9 psi.

The principal stresses for the element are

p1 = 7,780.9 psi
and
p2 = -7,780.9 psi

The maximum in-plane shear stress is

max = 7,780.9 psi
and the absolute maximum shear stress equals the in-plane shear stress. This
condition occurs when p1 and p2 have opposite signs.

For stress element D (on the +z side of the shaft):

The force Pz = -150.0 lb creates the following stresses:

a) A linearly distributed tension normal stress due to a bending moment about

the y axis. The magnitude of the normal stress is given by:
|x| = |My z| / I
= (150.0 lb)(10.0 in.)(0.6000 in.) / 0.1018 in.4
= 8,841.9 psi

The direction of the stress is shown on the stress element.

b) A shear stress due to a torsional moment about the x axis. The magnitude
of the shear stress is given by:

|T| = |T|c / J
= (150.0 lb)(18.0 in.)(0.6000 in.) / 0.2036 in.4
= 7,957.7 psi

Sign convention: Generally, the proper shear stress direction is determined by

inspection. The direction of the stress is shown on the stress element.

c) Although Pz creates shear stress in the shaft, the transverse shear stress on
element D in the z direction is zero at this location. When subjected to a shear
force in the z direction, the outermost surfaces of the shaft in the z direction are
free of shear stress.

Summary for stress element D (on the +z side of the shaft): The normal stresses
for the combined loading can be determined by superimposing the individual
cases. For stress element D (on the +z side of the shaft), the total normal stress
acting on the element is a tension stress of 8,841.9 psi. The shear stresses for the
combined loading act in the negative y direction on the positive x face of the
element. The magnitude of the shear stress is 7,957.7 psi.

The principal stresses for the element are

p1 = 13,524.3 psi
and
p2 = -4,682.4 psi

The maximum in-plane shear stress is

max = 9,103.3 psi
and the absolute maximum shear stress equals the in-plane shear stress. This
condition occurs when p1 and p2 have opposite signs.
