Assignment 6 – Dynamics of Flow
(1) What is the Euler’s equation of motion? Derive it. How will you obtain Bernoulli’s equation of
motion from it?
(2) Explain the principal of Venturimeter with neat sketch. Derive the expression for the rate of flow
through it.
(3) Define Orifice meter. Derive the equation of discharge of flow through it.
(4) What is Pitot tube? How will you determine the velocity at any point with the help of Pitot tube?

Examples
(1) The water is flowing through a tapper pipe of length 100 m having diameter 600 mm at the upper
end and 300 mm at lower end. The discharge is 50 L/s. Pipe has slope of 1 in 30 at lower end. Find
the pressure at lower end if the pressure at higher end is 19.62 N/cm².
(2) A pipeline having oil of specific gravity 0.87 changes in diameter from 200 mm diameter at a
position A to 500 mm diameter at a position B. Point B is 4m at the higher level. If the pressure at A
and B are 9.81 N/cm² and 5.88 N/cm² respectively. If the discharge is 200 L/s then determine the
loss of head and direction of flow.
(3) Find the discharge of water flowing through a pipe 30 cm diameter placed in an inclined position
where a venturimeter is inserted, having a throat diameter of 15 cm. The difference of pressure
between the main and throat is measured by a liquid of sp. gr. 0.6 in an inverted U-tube which gives
a reading of 30 cm. The loss of head between the main and throat is 0.2 times the kinetic head of
the pipe.
(4) An orifice meter with the orifice diameter 50 cm is inserted in a pipe of 30 cm diameter. The
pressure difference measured by mercury oil differential manometer on the two sides of orifice
meter gives a reading of 50 cm of mercury. Find the rate of flow of oil having specific gravity 0.9
when the co-efficient of the discharge of the orifice meter = 0.64
(5) 250 L/sec of water is flowing in a pipe having diameter of 300 mm. If the pipe is bend by 135°. Find
the magnitude and direction of resultant force on the bend. The pressure of water is 39.24 N/cm².
