Assignment 9 – Open Channel Flow

1. Give the various classification of flow in channel.

2. Derive the expression of discharge through open channel by Chezy’s formula.
3. Define the term most economical section of a channel. What are the conditions for the
rectangular channel of the best section?
4. Derive the condition for the most economical section for trapezoidal channel.
5. Prove that for a circular channel section, the depth of flow ,
d = 0.81 D for maximum velocity and
d = 0.95 D for maximum discharge
Where D=Diameter of circular channel, d=depth of flow
6. Explain the following terms as applied to non uniform flow:
i. Specific energy of a flowing liquid
ii. Minimum specific energy
iii. Critical depth
iv. Critical velocity
v. Critical flow
vi. Alternate depths
7. What is specific energy curve? Draw the specific energy curve and derive an
expression for the critical depth and critical velocity.
8. Explain hydraulic jump. Derive an expression for the depth of hydraulic jump in
terms of upstream Froude number.
9. Derive an expression for the variation of depth along the length of the bed of channel
for gradually varied flow in an open channel. State all the assumptions made.
10. Define the following terms:
i. Afflux
ii. Back water curve
iii. Length of hydraulic jump
11. Derive an expression for the length of back water curve.
