The STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) is an international
convention that establishes the minimum training, certification, and watchkeeping standards for
seafarers on an international level. The convention is maintained by the International Maritime
Organization (IMO). The STCW Code is divided into several sections, each addressing specific aspects
of training and certification.
• Objective: To provide seafarers with the basic knowledge and skills to survive at sea
in the event of ship abandonment.
• Objective: To provide seafarers with the basic knowledge and skills in the use of fire-
fighting equipment and appliances.
• Objective: To provide seafarers with basic knowledge and skills to provide first aid in
the event of accidents or illness on board.
• Content: Basic first aid techniques, handling and transportation of the injured, and
practical exercises.
• Objective: To provide seafarers with basic induction training on safety and social
responsibilities.
• Objective: To provide seafarers with the knowledge and skills to perform their duties
related to security on board a ship.
These courses are typically part of the mandatory basic training requirements for seafarers as per the
STCW Code. Seafarers need to undergo these courses to ensure they have the necessary skills and
knowledge to respond to emergencies and ensure the safety and security of themselves and others
on board a ship. The specific requirements for these courses may vary depending on the type of
vessel and the seafarer's role on board.
