Thesis Title: On the Teaching of Vocal Singing Skills in Debussy’s Art Songs

Introduction 1000 words. What is this Claude Debussy, (August 22, Professor’s Comments
research about? 1862 - March 25, 1918), French
composer, was one of the most
influential composers of the late 19th
and early 20th centuries and a
pioneer of impressionist music,
which had a great influence on
modern music in the 20th century.
His music does not focus on the
scenery or objects themselves, but
on the emotions inspired by these
things, hence the term
"impressionism". Most of the
characteristics of Debussy's musical
compositions are reflected in the
songs he composed, and these vocal
works fundamentally embody every
aspect of Debussy's artistic creation.
Debussy's art songs, which fully
embody the stylistic characteristics of
impressionist music, and his
unparalleled style, which has
attracted a large number of
composers to follow suit, also have
an irreplaceable role and status in
vocal works.
Debussy's art songs fully
embody the stylistic characteristics of
impressionistic music. This thesis will
take the study of the composition
characteristics of Debussy's classic
art songs as the starting point, and
will analyze Debussy's life, the
musical analysis of art songs, the
stylistic characteristics of
composition, and the characteristics
of lyrics in depth, so as to enhance
the understanding and attention of
vocal teachers and vocal learners to
Debussy's art songs; at the same
time, this paper will also conduct
teaching practice on Debussy's art
songs from the perspective of vocal
pedagogy. Using the results of the
teaching practice and research, we
will analyze and research more
suitable and targeted methods and
means for teaching Debussy's art
songs, and further improve the
theory and methods of vocal
teaching, so that we can more
accurately and perfectly interpret and
understand this master's classic
masterpieces.This thesis is planned
to be divided into four chapters:
Chapter 1, describes the background
of the topic of this thesis, the
purpose of the topic, the current
status of the research on the subject,
the problems that need to be
researched and solved, and the
research method. Chapter 2, gives
an overview of Debussy's art songs,
including the author's profile, the
artistic characteristics of music
creation, and the significance and
role of Debussy's art songs for vocal
music teaching. Chapter 3, focusing
on American vocal singing, explains
the definition, methods and goals of
vocal teaching. It also focuses on the
teaching content and teaching
difficulties of singing skills in vocal
music teaching. At the same time,
interviews and understanding of
vocal teachers and students in
several universities about the
teaching and learning of Debussy's
art songs are conducted to
summarize the current situation and
problems of Debussy's art songs in
vocal teaching and practice. In
Chapter 4, on the basis of the
problems found in Chapter 3, the
teaching methods of vocal singing
skills when singing Debussy art
songs are constructed and improved
by studying 5-7 classic Debussy art
songs, and the research conclusions
of this thesis are drawn.The main
issues studied in this thesis are: an
introduction to Debussy's life and the
characteristics of his art song
compositions, an analysis of
Debussy's classic art song
composing techniques, an overview
of vocal music pedagogy, the
significance of Debussy's art songs
in vocal music teaching, the current
situation and problems of teaching
Debussy's art songs, and a summary
and improvement of Debussy's art
song teaching methods. The purpose
is to improve the teaching ability of
teachers and the singing level of
singers, and also to make many of
Debussy's classic art songs more
widely disseminated.

The purpose of vocal music


teaching is to let learners learn to
sing songs with a more beautiful
voice, in addition to learning singing
skills, but also to learn music theory
knowledge, music literacy and other
content. In vocal music teaching,
songs are mainly art songs and
opera arias. Art songs, on the other
hand, are usually taught in German,
French and Italian art songs. In
China, although French art songs are
one of the important teaching
contents, Debussy's art songs have
certain skills and difficulties when
they are composed, and require
good musicianship and singing skills
when they are sung, and due to the
obvious constraints of different
languages, Debussy's art songs are
not commonly used in daily teaching.
For both vocal learners and vocal
teachers, the singing, teaching, and
theoretical research of Debussy art
songs are rare and a relatively weak
link. Vocal teaching aims to achieve
a standardized and perfect singing of
vocal works by teaching scientific
singing skills and accurate emotional
expression. When teaching vocal
music, art song teaching is one of
the very important contents in vocal
music teaching, and Debussy art
song is also a necessary teaching
content in vocal music teaching
because of its high theoretical skills
of music composition and unique
style of music emotion. There are
few articles that focus on the
instructional methods of Debussy art
songs. Through this study, we can
give some reference and guidance to
those who will teach and learn
Debussy art songs. Through the
teaching of Debussy art songs, not
only can learners feel the unique
charm of French art songs and
improve their personal humanistic
and musical qualities, but also
improve their singing skills and
musical emotion expression ability.
