MESSAGE FROM THE DIVISION DIRECTOR

In a fast-changing world, leaders need to be agile. They

should be ready to unlearn to learn. In the new era,
domain knowledge must be refreshed frequently.
Leaders should also be more curious or risk getting
dated quickly.

Learn to trust your team, don't be a micro-

manager.

Delegate Effectively, But Give Them Freedom To Fail

Too.

Story telling like a pro

Prepare the story

Select the events you want to share. Decide on the emotions you want to arouse from the listeners.
Visualize the story you want to tell. Become one with the story.
Don't hamper the imagination of listeners. Give them a chance to visualize the story.
Present the story
Play around with volume, pitch, rate, and pause to bring out different scenes and characters.
Show the audience your story: use facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, and avoid barriers (speaking behind
the lectern).

How Strong Is Your Willpower? Write It Down

By Beverley Nambozo Nsengiyunva, DTM

Founding Editor Sauti ya Toastmasters Newsletter, Bukoto

Toastmasters Club
In 2001, I sent about ten funding proposals and letters to
embassies and banks in Kampala, asking them for money to
fund my backpacking trip to South Africa. In return, my offer
was a full article in The Monitor Newspaper, one of Uganda’s
leading mainstream print newspapers. I had become
acquainted with the editors during writing workshops, possibly
the only creative writing workshops in Uganda at the time.
Journalists and newspaper editors were close to royalty, in
2001.

From one polite rejection after another, I relentlessly pursued my goal and wrote daily entries in my diary,
envisioning myself backpacking across Johannesburg, Kruger National Park, Table Mountain, Jacaranda
City and finally returning to Kampala with a head full of stories.

I willed myself into this position until it finally happened.

In August of that year, with my first job after my first degree, I taught at one of the few international
schools in Kampala, which was a highly prestigious job, paying in USD. I was the first of my close friends to
receive redemption from imminent post-university brokenness and even bought a car. A month into the
new job, I was selected, being the youngest and ‘coolest’ teacher at the school, to travel with sixteen
teenagers to South Africa, with a fully paid ticket and accommodation for the accompanying staff.

My Diary. My Willpower.
Tempted to return to the embassies and banks and sing, ‘Nya-nya-nya-nya-nya’ I was too rooted in awe
and mesmerization. My diary entries were filled with determination to cross the borders until I traveled to
the promised Rainbow nation of money, magnificence, and marvel. The New York of Artica, it was called.

My diary entries were iron-clad with conviction and my willpower was unrivalled. I made it. Two months of
sending proposals and I made it. Not as a backpacker but as a traveler on South African Airways, staying at
a four-star hotel and visiting the most luxurious places like Sun City, Jacaranda City, and Africa’s largest
zoo in Pretoria, where I saw a penguin for the first time.

Traveling has always been among my top 5 priorities in life since I could read maps.

In 2014, I decided that every year I would travel to a country I had never been to and so profound was this
desire that it happened every single year. In 2016, I wanted the trip to coincide with my 40th birthday and
indeed I was in Somaliland on my 40th birthday in July. Again, my diary had already set that in motion,
after which I sang praises thanking God for this answered prayer.

2018 came along, and being pregnant with my fourth child, I could not travel after March that year. In
honor of World Poetry Day, on 21 March 2018, I was invited to Malawi for poetry celebrations.

The will is a fortress and the amount of power and focus you give to your desire, will determine the amount
of success and honor you receive from it. Focus on what is important to you and not what others think is
important to you. They are not always right.

They may have an idea what you need but you are the one living that life. Write it down—every day. An
hour a day focusing on what is important to you and your desires will come faster than you have ever
imagined, in bountiful strides, pouring in like the Murchison Falls.
