Due to the many cases of abuse and violence against women, the Philippine government seek several

solutions and some of these solutions were the Magna Carta of Women and the Anti-Rape Law of 1977.
The Magna Carta of Women aims to abolish the discrimination through the recognition, fulfillment,
protection, and the promotion of the Filipino women. In addition to this, the bill was named as the
Magna Carta of Women to highlight women's ownership in the bill, as well as their participation. Under
this law, discrimination against women is defined as a measure or practice of general application that
fails to provide for mechanisms to offset or address sex or gender-based disadvantages or limitations of
women, as a result of which women are denied or restricted in the recognition and protection of their
rights. While the Anti-Rape Law of 1997 redifines rape as “A crime against person” as it violates a
person’s well being and not just ones virginity or purity. It is also stated that rape is committed by a man
who shall have sexual intercourse with a woman under any of the following circumstances: Through
force, threat, or intimidation, etc. It occurs when by any person who, under any of the above
circumstances, commits an act of sexual assault by inserting his penis into another person’s mouth or
anal orifice, or any instrument or object, into the genital or oral orifice of another person.
