I. Background Information

Using Adverbs

An adverb is a word that describes an adjective, a verb, or another adverb.


A
Kinds of adverbs:
1. Adverb of manner tells how. They describe action words or verbs. The
words severely, sweetly, fast, still, gracefully and loudly answer the question
how.
Example: The girls danced gracefully to the music.

2. Adverb of time tell when an action happened and for how long. They may
be one-word adverbs or phrases.

Example: I will talk to him tomorrow.
They were at the sea for two days.

3. Adverb of place tells where something is done. They also indicate
both
location and movement. Like adverbs of time, these may be one-
word
adverbs or adverbial phrases.

One-word Adverbs Adverbial Phrases


here over here/there
somewhere behind the building
sideways around the yard
uphill off the wall
outside towards the river
Example: The visitors are waiting outside.
The dog is running around the yard.

4. Adverb of intensity indicates the extent or degree of an action or


description. These are usually placed before the verb, adjective or
adverb they are modifying with some exceptions.
Commonly used adverb of intensity are: enough, too, very,
extremely, terribly, amazingly, quite, pretty, rather, fairly,
not specifically.
Examples:
1. The wildlife agency is protective enough.
2. Can I take care of a turtle, too?
3. The tiny creature is very interesting.
4. It is extremely hot here during summer.

III. ACTIVITY NO. 1

A. Directions: Pick out the adverb of manner used in each


sentence.
1. The boy courageously placed his finger into the table.
2. The water came slowly through the leak.
3. He patiently spent the whole night trying to prevent the flow of water from
the dike
4. The neighborhood waited the eagerness for news about the boy.
5. They knew well how the boy sacrificed to save the whole village.

B. Use the following adverbs of time and place in your own sentence.

6. by the river – on the summer nights


7. last April- in Singapore
8. at six o’clock in the morning – at breakfast table
9. towards the north – at 5 p. m.
10. in 2021 – on planet Mars

IV. ACTIVITY 2

A. Directions: Pick out the adverb of intensity used in each


sentence. Identify the word it modifies. Write your answers in your paper.

Example: Hawksbill turtles also feed on sponges and other invertebrates
