Critical Analysis of the Poem “Equality”

Maya Angelou, the author of the poem “Equality,” is an award-winning American poet and civil rights
activist who is also the author of the celebrated memoir “I Know Why the Caged Birds Sing.” The poem’s title,
“Equality,” refers to how people treated others with racial inequality based on their gender, nationality, and skin
color. Maya Angelou wrote the poem “Equality,” which was released in 1990 and depicts gender bias and
inequality. The poem’s objective is to express the author’s belief that everyone should be treated with equal
respect, because every human being existing in society deserve to live freely on the planet Earth. Each of us did
not deserve the hatred that we face on a daily basis in our society. Throughout the poem, the lines “Equality, and
I will be free” were repeated six times. The author attempts to discuss the importance of equality and freedom in
society without discrimination, or prejudice in regard to their traditions, beliefs, gender, nationality, or skin color
in the poem.
The issue raised in the poem is all about how some people lack and act indifferently towards other things
like treating others equally. Others act as if this is a minor issue, but it is not. As far as I can remember, I have
never believed that everyone in the world in equal, because some people in our society demonstrate their
disrespect for others. Our society in the modern age are full of discrimination, disrespect, and racism due to the
lack of equality, knowledge, and respect to other people in the society.
The author captures the reader’s attention with her message, allowing them to visualize her words in their
minds, because of the writer’s simple but effective style of communication she express herself through the use of
the poem. It is reasonable to infer that the message she attempting to communicate drew the attention of the
audience, also she was able to ensure that each reader will retain the idea that she wishes to convey to the reader.
Additionally, she was able to effectively communicate the message to me through the use of her viewpoint and the
emotion that the poetry attains.
The poem’s topic affects me in the side that it makes me understand how people in our society have a
negative attitude towards others people. On the other hand, it made me think that there are still some individuals
who care about others and do not tolerate discrimination, racism, and prejudice in society. For my opinion, to be
able to live freely, each of us must be equal and learn to appreciate each other’s ideas, traditions, and nationalities
because no matter who you are, where you came from, your true colors, or your identity, don’t be afraid to express
yourself because it is matter.
