Unit I- Ch 4: Effective Communication

I. Answer the following questions:

1. What are the key factors of effective communication?

Ans. Following are the key factors of effective communication:

i) Content- refers to the language that has been used in the message.
ii) Process: refers to the way the message is delivered.
iii) Context: refers to the situation/environment in which the message is delivered.

2. Why is the content of a message important?

Ans. The content of a message is important because sometimes even a simple message can be
misunderstood because words have different meanings depending on the context. So for effective
communication it is necessary to use proper sentences and correct words.

3. What are the 7 C’s of communication?

Ans. The 7 C’s of communication are: Clear, Concise, Concrete, Correct, Coherent, Complete and
Courteous.
Unit I- Ch 5: Basic Writing Skills

I. Answer the following questions:

1. What is a phrase? Give one example of each type of phrase.

Ans. A phrase is a group of words that forms a unit within a sentence but is incomplete independently.

There are different type of phrases:

i) Noun phrase-act like noun in sentence. Example: We all love watching movies.
ii) Verb phrase- group of main verbs and helping verbs within a sentence. Example: He was eager to go
out.
iii) Adjective phrase- built around an adjective and consists of adjectives and/or articles. Example: The
final exams were unbelievably difficult.
iv) Adverbial phrase- built around an adverb by adding word before/after it. Example: We walked very
carefully across the floor.
v) Prepositional phrase- begins with preposition and is followed by a noun. Example: The book was on
the table.

2. What is definite article? Where is it used? Give three examples.

Ans. The definite article, ‘the’ can be used with both countable nouns(singular as well as plural) and
uncountable nouns. It is used when the noun that follows is already known.

Example: i) The man who wrote this book is famous.


ii) I scratched the red car parked outside.
iii) I live in the small house with a blue door

3. How is the usage of ‘a’ different from ‘an’ in English language?


Ans. ‘a’ is used before a singular countable noun when it is mention for the first time, to express
quantity and before singular countable noun or adjective beginning with a consonant sound.

‘an’ performs similar function as ‘a’. it is used before singular countable noun which begin with a
vowel sound (a,e,i,o,u).
Unit II- Ch 6: Stress Management and its Techniques

I. Answer the following questions:

1. What is stress?

Ans. Stress can be defined as a reaction to any external stimuli that triggers changes in one’s
personality.

2. What are the various factors that cause stress?

Ans. Some of the factors that can contribute to stress are threat, dangerous situation, irrational
demands, unrealistic goals, expectations, financial loss, bad experiences, discrimination etc.

3. Explain the importance of stress management.

Ans. Stress management allows a person to react positively in stressful situations. It infuses a sense of
control and accomplishment and equips us with the ability to handle any situation efficiently.

4. What are the different types of stressor?

Ans. Positive stressor, Dangerous stressor, and irrelevant stressor.


Unit II- Ch 7: Ability to work Independently

I. Answer the following questions:

1. List any four elements that keep a person motivated.

Ans. Four elements that keeps a person motivated are:

i) Personal drive to achieve, the desire to improve, or to meet specific standards.


ii) Commitment to personal or organisational goals.
iii) Initiative or readiness to act on opportunities.
iv) Optimism, which is the ability to continue and pursue goals in the face of failures.

2. Explain the advantages of working independently.

Ans. Advantages of working independently are:

i) Boosts self confidence


ii) Make the person self-reliant
iii) Makes the person emotionally independent
iv) Makes decision making an easy task
v) Brings out the best in a person
vi) Increases self-value and self esteem
vii) Makes the person accountable

3. Why is self-regulation important for becoming independent?

Ans. It makes people more independent as it enables them to make the right decision about their
behaviour. It teaches them how to behave in different situations without any guidance.

4. Define self-regulation.

Ans. Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage your reaction to the things happening
around you. Developing this ability requires self-awareness, emotional intelligence, efficient filtering of
sensory stimulation, coping effectively with stress, relating well to others, and sustaining focus.
