Case study 2
Joseph works in a shoe factory. His job is to polish
shoes by hand. He has been working in the shoe factory
for one year. Joseph’s working conditions are poor. He
suffers back pain and the skin on his hands is damaged
from constant polishing. Joseph is bored and unhappy
in his job and his work is of a low standard. He can’t
leave his job as he needs the money to support his
family and pay for his children’s education.
The company is investing in new capital equipment and Joseph is worried that he
will be replaced by a machine in the future. He thinks that his job will be more
secure if he learns a new skill.
He has asked to be trained to stitch shoes together, but hasn’t heard anything
back from management. Joseph’s manager is strict and doesn’t allow employees
to talk while they are working.
Imagine you are Joseph’s manager. Describe at least three ways in which you
would try to improve Joseph’s motivation and job satisfaction. Explain the reasons
for your suggestions. Make notes and be ready to explain your case study and
share your ideas with others.
