Figure 1: Clutch plate

A single clutch plate shown in the Fig.1 above, rotates at 1980 rpm when engaged and
has the following properties:
D = 290 mm, d = 150 mm, µ = 0.3, F = 1.1kN
Clearly state your assumptions and determine;

(a) the torque that can be transmitted, (14)

Assuming Uniform Pressure for a relatively new clutch plate,

µ F n D3 − d3

T = = 75.05 N m
3 D2 − d2
Assuming Uniform Wear after initially wear has taken place,
µF n
T = (D + d) = 72.6 N m

(b) the frictional power of this clutch, (4)
Assuming Uniform Pressure for a relatively new clutch plate,
2πN T
P =Tω= = 15.56 kW
60
Assuming Uniform Wear after initially wear has taken place,

P = 15.053 kW

Figure 2: Short shoe

A block brake with wooden shoes on a cast-iron drum is arranged as shown in Fig. 2.
The coefficient of friction is 0.3,

(a) Determine the actuating force F required to absorb 18kW with a drum speed of
270 rpm, anti-clockwise, (14)
X hp
ML = 0
F × 250 + 5F × 480 − RL × 240 − µ RL × 200 = 0
∴ RL = 8, 833F
X hp
MR = 0
2F × 250 + RR × 240 − µRR × 200 − 5F × 480 = 0
∴ RR = 10.55F
P × 60
T orque = = 636.5 kN m
2πN
T orque = µ (RL + RR ) r ∴ F = 547.3 N

(b) Estimate the bending moment produced on the shaft if the brake drum is 200mm
from the nearest bearing and is on an overhung end of the shaft. (12)

Bending Moment

M = (1.722F ) × 0.2 = 188.49 N m
