 A documentation that which allows to record and review all
structural damages on the outside of the aircraft in a much
more reliable way.

 It is part of the Onboard Documentation and kept in the

aircraft cockpit. The dent-and-buckle chart marks the
location of the aircraft damage with a number on 2D
pictures. In an overview table, all damages are listed with
its location, dimensions, and reference to approved data.

 As the main source stating the presence and the location

of external structural damages used by the flight or
ground crew, the dent-and-buckle chart should be
enclosed and maintained in an Aircraft Technical Log
Book on board retainer.
To document the reported or observed allowable structural
damages:

1. By the Flight Crew during flight (Bird Strike)

2. By the Base Maintenance during visual Inspections
3. By the Line Maintenance during 360 / Walk around / V.I
ALLOWABLE OR NEGLIGIBLE DAMAGES CAUSED
BY:
1. Lightning Strikes
2. Bird Strikes
3. Equipment / Tools
4. FODs
- STRUCTURAL REPAIR MANUAL (SRM)
Each Chapter of the SRM has a section for “ALLOWABLE DAMAGE” that the Maintenance
use to check if the damage is allowed without any further action or required to have a
temporary repair with repair interval needed.
- STRUCTURAL REPAIR MANUAL (SRM)
Each Chapter of the SRM has a section for “ALLOWABLE DAMAGE” that the Maintenance
use to check if the damage is allowed without any further action or required to have a
temporary repair with repair interval needed.
Allowable damage values specified in each chapter are divided into 3 categories:

1. Permanent allowable damage (categorized as Repair Category A)

 this category of allowable damage is established in such a way that damage within this
limit does not require a structural repair or additional inspections during the design
service goal or the extended service goal as applicable of the aircraft.

2. Permanent allowable damage with operating limits (categorized as Repair Category B)

this category of allowable damage is established in such a way that damage within this
limit does not require a structural repair during the design life goal or the extended
service goal as applicable of the aircraft. However additional structural inspections task
may be required before the design service goal is reached. An inspection threshold and
repeat interval will be provided for this type of allowable damage.

3. Temporary allowable damage (categorized as Repair Category C)

this category of allowable damage is established in such a way that damage within this
limit must be permanently repaired within a defined operating limit i.e.: 'x' flight cycles
or 'x' flight hours or 'x' calendar months.
The definitions of the different categories of damage tolerant repairs are as follows:

Category A:
Repairs that meet the design certification basis of the aircraft and for which the
inspections given in the Baseline Zonal Inspection (BZI) are sufficient and no other
actions are necessary.

Category B:
Repairs that meet the design certification basis of the aircraft but supplemental
inspections are necessary at a specified threshold and repeat intervals.

Category C:
Repairs that meet the design certification basis of the aircraft but are temporary and
must be inspected periodically beyond normal maintenance with eventual replacement
or upgrade at a specified time.
IMPORTANCE:
◦ To monitor the allowable Structural damages and
scheduled for timely repair.

WHEN DO DAMAGES IN THE D&B REPAIRED?

◦ Commonly during the C-Check.
MEL – AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS / COMPONENTS.

CDL – EXTERNAL STURCTURES THAT IS ALLOWED

TO BE REMOVED AS PER CDL LIST.

DENT AND BUCKLE – STRUCTURAL DAMAGES THAT

ARE ALLOWABLE OR NEGLIGIBLE (CFI RAISED FOR
CAT B AND CAT C DAMAGES).
1. Where can we find the reference to know if the
dents found are allowable or negligible?
 SRM | ALLOWABLE DAMAGE SECTION OF THE CHAPTER

2. What category would a dent that is permanently

allowable defect with no further actions
required fall?
 CATEGORY A

3. What is Cat “C” damage in the Dent and Buckle?

 DAMAGES THAT ARE TEMPORARY (must be permanently
repaired within a defined operating limit i.e.: 'x' flight cycles
or 'x' flight hours or 'x' calendar months.)
