Informative Speech Outline

The primary purpose of informative speaking is to help clarify a complex process, idea or
event for your audience. In other words, you are to inform/teach us about something or
how to do something. What you choose to inform us about can be as simple or as
complicated as you like, however it should be something interesting to the audience and
therefore not common knowledge. It should speak to issues of social, community or
cultural relevance. It should be something that your audience will find meaningful (i.e.,
something they might actually be able to do or want to do upon hearing your speech,
something that may affect us, something that could benefit our lives). In other words, you
should teach your audience how to do something that will help them better engage in
their community, that will help them make a positive difference, or that will help them
develop a clearer understanding of the diverse cultures that comprise their community.
The speech should still be divided into three main points. You will integrate three outside
sources into your speech to support or engage us about the topic.
