BaZi Quick Reference Verses

BaZi Quick Reference Verses

The following verses - duly extracted from BaZi classical texts -

eloquently yet candidly allow one to understand and master the
many tenets governing Useful Gods.

In order to facilitate your understanding of these verses, the technical

BaZi term ‘Star’ is used in place of ‘Useful God’, here. Nevertheless, it
is equally important for you to know that BaZi texts and practitioners
commonly use ‘Star’ and ‘Useful God’ interchangeably, since they
both mean the same thing.

「官怕傷,財怕劫」
An Officer Star is afraid of being hurt, while a Wealth Star is afraid of
being robbed.

「印綬見財,愈多愈災」
Where a Resource Star encounters a Wealth Star, the more the
former encounters and interacts with the latter, the more likely the
occurrence of disaster.

「財星得祿,父命長春」
Where a Wealth Star is seated and prosperous, one’s father shall be
blessed with longevity.

「財多身弱,富屋貧人」
Where Wealth Stars are present in abundance but one’s Self Element
(i.e. Day Master) is weak, one may still be afflicted by poverty in life,
despite hailing from a rich family or background.

「財弱身旺,見劫為禍」
Where the Wealth Star is weak but one’s Self Element is prosperous,
calamity may ensue where a Rob Wealth Star is encountered.

5.The Useful God
3 Types of Useful God

The Useful God

The balancing Often regarded as the ‘Soul’ of BaZi, the Useful God (Yong Shen 扶仰) is
element is the considered one of the most important elements in BaZi - next to the Self
Element or Day Master, of course.
Medicine.
The Medicine As you already know, the Useful God is the element that restores or
maintains Balance in a BaZi Chart. And Balance, of course, is perhaps
is called the the single most important concept in the study of BaZi and Chinese
Useful God. Metaphysics, for too much of a good or bad thing is never really a good
thing, ultimately.

Why is the Useful God so important? In a sentence, the Useful God

determines a person’s wealth, wellbeing, living conditions, nobility,
charisma, character, abilities, ambitions, level of success and lifespan - in
short, practically every facet of a person’s life!

3 Types of Useful Gods

The Useful God can be classified according to any of the following three
categories, in relation to the role it plays in a BaZi Chart:

• Fu Yang 扶仰 (Medicate)
• Tiao Hou 調候 (Regulate)
• Tong Guan 通關 (Arbitrate)

1) 扶仰 Fu Yang Useful God (Medicate)

Generally speaking, the role of a Fu Yang Useful God is to:

• Strengthen a BaZi that is too weak;

• Weaken a BaZi that is too strong; or
• Control a BaZi that is too prosperous.

Remember; the ultimate objective of the Useful God is to bring or restore

Balance to a BaZi Chart. In order to do so, the Useful God plays the
role of the balancing element - or Medicine.

As a rule of thumb, you should also know that the following principles
apply in the case of a Fu Yang Useful God:

• Where the Officer and Killings are prosperous, the Self Element
is weak;
• Where there are too many Eating Gods or Hurting Officers, the
Self Element is weak;
• Where there is too much wealth, the Self Element is weak;
• Where there are too many Resources, the Self Element is strong;
and
• Where there are too many Friends and Rob Wealth, the Self
Element is strong.

5.The Useful God
3 Types of Useful God

2) 調候 Tiao Hou Useful God (Regulate)

A Tiao Hou Useful God serves to ‘regulate’ the flow of the elements in a
BaZi Chart, in order to preserve or maintain Balance.

One good example of an act to ‘regulate’ a BaZi revolves around the

concept of Dryness and Heat, or Dampness and Coldness. For instance,
Water is needed to bring moisture and coolness amidst the heat of
Summer. Likewise, Fire is required in order to bring about warmth and
comfort amidst the chill of Winter.

The general rule of thumb in applying a ‘Regulative’ Useful God would

hence be to:

• First, ‘regulate’ the prevalent Climate; and

• Secondly, apply the ‘medicine’ (i.e. Useful God) to the BaZi.

3) 通關 Tong Guan Useful God (Arbitrate)

The role of a Tong Guan Useful God is to make ‘peace’ or at least, ensure
that ‘peace’ exists, between the elements in a BaZi Chart. Its role can
also be described in Chinese as He Jie 和解, which can be transliterated
as the ‘peacemaker’.

As such, a Tong Guan Useful God’s role as an arbitrator or peacemaker

is called for, whenever two strong forces or elements are opposed to one
another in a BaZi Chart. And where this ‘peacemaker’ is found in a BaZi
Chart, wealth and nobility are almost certain to be the lot of the person to
whom the Chart belongs, in life.

Now, if the ‘peacemaker’ element - i.e. Useful God - is strong, the Luck
Pillars need not even exert their influence for a BaZi Chart to be well-
balanced and indeed, prosperous. Should this ‘peacemaker’ element
happen to be absent from the BaZi Chart itself, however, it would hence be
imperative that it is found in the Luck Pillars. And even in the latter case,
wealth and nobility can be attained once this person’s BaZi undergoes the
pertinent, particular Luck Pillars in life.

The worst-case scenario is when an arbitrative Useful God - or peacemaker

element - is completely absent from a BaZi Chart and its Luck Pillars.
One’s life will tend to be riddled by miseries and challenges under such
circumstances, although much will still depend on how one perceives
such challenges, and how one goes about trying to surmount them.

In any case, one would still at least be forewarned and hence, forearmed,
to deal with such challenges, before they even take place!

5.The Useful God
3 Types of Useful God

The Highs & Low of a Useful God

Now, in order for a BaZi Chart to be considered well-balanced and hence
hint of a conducive and correspondingly well-balanced life, it must be:

• Vibrant and healthy;

• Warm and comfortable; and
• Have its Qi flowing harmoniously throughout the entire Chart.

Then and only then will this help us to identify the Useful God with relative
ease!

As a rule of thumb, a Useful God must be:

1. Either Present or Absent (i.e. Not Present) in a BaZi Chart;

2. Good or Bad;
3. Strong or Weak;
4. Sentimental or Merciless; or
5. United or Divided.

Take a moment to recap this rule of thumb.

A Strong Day Master or Self Element:

Likes
• Controlling another element;
• Being controlled by another element; and
• Producing another element.

Dislikes
• An identical or same element; and
• The element that produces it.

Conversely, a Weak Day Master or Self Element:

Likes

• The element that produces it.

Dislikes
• Controlling another element;

The Eating God Star for this Ding (丁) Fire Day Master is Ji (己) Earth. This
Useful God, however, is considered a ‘merciless’ one, since Ji (己) Earth
cannot really keep Water under control.

Nevertheless, given the winter timing (i.e. season) of this Day Master’s
birth, it is hence a weak Day Master. This is because Ding (丁) Fire Qi
is considered ‘dead’ in the winter. On the other hand, Water - this Day
Master’s Seven Killings Star - is at its strongest at this time of the year. As
such, the best option of Useful God available to this Day Master would be
Ji (己) Earth - its Eating God Star.

This is the BaZi Chart of a Wu (戊) Earth Day Master, born in a Zi (子) (Rat)
Month. And since this particular Month also happens to fall in the winter,
Water - this Day Master’s Wealth Star - is at its strongest. As such, it is
even capable of exerting a counter-control over Earth, which would then
be trapped.

This is why Wu (戊) Earth - this Day Master’s Friend Star - is needed as
a Useful God, in order to strengthen Earth, as well as keep such strong
Water under control. In other words, Wu (戊) Earth is hence considered
a ‘sentimental’ Useful God to this Day Master, since its presence allows
Water to be better kept under control.

5.The Useful God
Sentimental vs Merciless

Favorable and Unfavorable elements

Before you proceed any further, do be reminded that a strong command

of the Five Elements and Productive, Weakening and Controlling Cycles is
required, in order to fully understand the implications behind the relationships
between the different types of Qi at different points in time.

Wood Qi 甲 (Jia) 乙 (Yi)

Wood Qi is prosperous in spring. As such, it prefers
春 to encounter Fire Qi, which would weaken or at least
Spring
moderate it.

夏 Wood Qi is weak in summer. As such, it prefers to

Summer be nourished or moisturized by Water.

Although Wood Qi is considered dead in autumn, this

season can be divided into early autumn (July), mid-
秋 autumn (August) and late autumn (September). And
Autumn in early autumn, Wood Qi prefers to encounter Fire
Qi, while Water is preferred in mid-autumn and Fire
preferred in late autumn.

Wood Qi, being strong in winter, likes to encounter

冬 Fire or Earth Qi, the former of which will weaken or
Winter moderate it, while the latter will control it. In either
case, Wood Qi will hence be balanced.

Fire Qi 丙 (Bing) 丁 (Ding)

春 Fire Qi is strong in spring, and hence likes to see an

Spring abundance of Wealth-related Useful Gods.

夏 Being prosperous in summer, Fire Qi prefers to en-

Summer counter at least a strong Killings Useful God.

Since Fire Qi is considered ‘trapped’ in autumn, Rob

秋 Wealth and Goat Blade Structures are preferred in
Autumn
order to ‘unleash’ it.

Since Fire Qi is ‘dead’ in winter, Resource or Eating

冬 God Structures are preferred under such circum-
Winter
stances in order to bring balance to the BaZi Chart.

5.The Useful God
Sentimental vs Merciless

Earth Qi 戊 (Wu) 己 (Ji)

Since Earth Qi is considered ‘dead’ in spring, it likes
春 to be further produced or strengthened by Fire under
Spring
such circumstances.

Earth Qi is strong in summer, but due to the heat and

夏 dryness brought about by this season, it also prefers
Summer
to be softened and irrigated by Water.

Particularly weak during the Shen Chinese (August)

秋 and You Chinese (September) months, Earth Qi
Autumn prefers to be strengthened by the Friends and Rob
Wealth Useful God in the autumn.

Considered ‘trapped’ in winter, Earth Qi prefers to be

冬 nourished, produced or at least, balanced by Fire or
Winter
Wood Qi.

Metal Qi 庚 (Geng) 辛 (Xin)

Metal Qi - being ‘trapped’ in spring - likes to encoun-
春 ter Friends or Rob Wealth type of Useful Gods, in
Spring
order to be ‘unleashed’.

夏 Being ‘dead’ in summer, Metal Qi likes to encounter

Summer either Water Qi or Earth Qi; if not both.

秋 Already prosperous in autumn, Metal Qi likes to en-

Autumn counter Water or Wood Qi.

Although considered to be weak in winter, Metal Qi

冬 still prefers to encounter Fire or Wood Qi at this time
Winter
of the year.

Water Qi 壬 (Ren) 癸 (Gui)

春 Considered weak in spring, Water Qi still prefers to

Spring encounter Earth or Wood Qi during this season.

Since it is considered ‘trapped’ in summer, Water

夏 Qi prefers to be ‘unleashed’ by Resource or Friends
Summer
type of Useful Gods under such circumstances.

Since it is considered ‘trapped’ in summer, Water

秋 Qi prefers to be ‘unleashed’ by Resource or Friends
Autumn
type of Useful Gods under such circumstances.

Water Qi is at its peak and most prosperous in win-

冬 ter, and hence likes to be countered or controlled by
Winter
Fire or Earth Qi.

5.The Useful God
Strong or Weak Useful God

United vs. Divided

Other than being Sentimental or Merciless, a Useful God should also be

considered in relation to whether it happens to be United or Divided.

A Useful God is considered to be ‘United’ when it also happens to be

found or located to the immediate left or right of the Day Master (i.e.
Self Element). In other words, it must appear as the Heavenly Stem
immediately adjacent to the Self Element in a BaZi Chart.

In addition, this Useful God should not be Countered, Weakened,

Clashed Away, Combined With, Destroyed or Harmed by another
element in the Chart.

A Strong Useful God 用神有力 is, in summary:

• A Useful God found in the Earthly Branch of the Month Pillar;

• A Useful God that is timely and firmly ‘rooted’ in its supporting

element; and

• A Useful God that is in perfect position and hence

in-formation.

Conversely, a Weak Useful God 用神無力 is:

• A Useful God that is not present in a timely or supportive
manner;

• A Useful God with little or no roots (i.e. not ‘rooted’), or one that
is either ‘attacked’ or ‘combined away’ by another element;

• A Useful God that is either NOT in position or NOT in-formation;

or

• Winter
A Useful God that encounters or has entered a Death and
Emptiness Luck Period or Pillar.

Useful God Principles

Although a matter of revision, it would definitely help for you to be acquainted with the following
principles - as stipulated in classical BaZi texts - in order to better understand how a Useful God plays
its role with regard to a person’s BaZi Chart.

• 用之官星不可傷。不用官星儘可傷。
An Officer Useful God must not be hurt.

• 用之財星不可劫。不用財星儘可劫。
A Wealth Useful God must not be robbed.

• 用之綬星不可壞。不用綬星儘可壞。
A Resource Useful God must not be damaged.

• 用之食神不可奪。不用食神儘可奪。
An Eating God Useful God must not be stolen.

• 用之為祿不可沖。
A Prosperous (i.e. Friend) Useful God must not be clashed with or against.

In addition:

• A Useful Seven Killings must not be Controlled. Once Controlled,

things may take a turn for the more adverse or dangerous. If
Seven Killings features prominently or strongly in a BaZi, it must be
Controlled. If the Seven Killings is prosperous and the Self Element
is weak, it would be better for the former to be Weakened. If the Self
Element is strong while the Seven Killings is weak, there is hence the
need to use a Wealth Element to balance it.

• Where there are too many Goat Blade Structures tapping into the
Eating God, the advent or presence of a Sha will only bring about
disaster.

• Where the Wealth Element is strong but the Self Element is weak, a
Rob Wealth or Goat Blade relationship should be used. If Rob Wealth
is strong but the Wealth Element is weak, it would be better to have
an Eating God present.

• It would be good to undergo Resource Luck - or a Resource Luck

Pillar - where the Officer Element is prosperous but the Self Element
is weak. Should the Officer Element happen to be weak but the
Resource Element prosperous, a Wealth Star is needed to bring
balance to the BaZi Chart.

• There is no point or use in having an ‘Aimless Outlet’. Where Sha is

strong, it is best to have a strong Eating God Structure present as
well.

• An overabundance of Goat Blade Structures is an inauspicious thing

to have in a BaZi Chart. Where both Wealth and Sha are strong or
prominently featured, however, a Goat Blade Structure would be
needed to bring balance to a BaZi Chart.

• In the event of Conflicting Structures being simultaneously present in

a BaZi Chart, ‘making peace’ - or an ‘arbitrage’ made possible by Tong
Guan 通關 - should be the preferred choice of action to be taken.

• Where a Goat Blade Structure happens to be simultaneously present

with a Sha, it would be best to resort to a Resource Element for
balance to be restored to a BaZi Chart.

• Where Goat Blade and Wealth-related Structures are present, use an

Output Element to balance the BaZi Chart.

• In the event that a Hurting Officer conflicts or clashes with a Direct

Officer, a Wealth Element is needed to resolve this conflict.

• Where a Wealth and Resource Element battle or clash with one

another, an Officer Element can serve to arbitrate between the
conflicting elements.

• Where a Resource Star clashes an Eating God, a Friends Element can

serve to arbitrate between the conflicting elements.

In the spring months, the ice melts and there is an
